It’s 5:25am, and although this sounds utterly ridiculous, I can’t sleep because all I can think about is eggs benedict. Now, this has always been a firm favourite breakfast of mine, from the poached egg with a firm white and golden runny yolk, to the freshly toasted English muffin topped with crispy bacon, and especially the thick varnish of hollandaise sauce. I was devastated when Avanti did away with it. Cardiff has a place that actually does lobster benedict, which I really must try.

And it made me think, I bet a good few other forumers must have a certain dish, snack or drink in their mind right now that they’d love to be devouring while they browse the site.

Scotch Pies, the only outlet in my part of the East Midlands that stocked them was Iceland but they discontinued them a couple of months ago. Looks like a trip to Corby will be on the cards in the very near future.

Eggs Benedict is way too posh for my liking. Just give me a couple of rashers of bacon or a bit o' square sausage in a well-fired roll.

I do enjoy a square Lorne sausage when I'm in Scotland, and usually take a packet of them home with me.
Unfortunately they're unobtainable down my way except by mail order in too big a quantity.
I've tried making my own, but again it's not easy to make a small quantity. If I do make them I have to freeze most of the batch.
I could just enjoy one for breakfast right now :(

The Square Lorne Sausage is one thing that Iceland do still stock (frozen of course) but if you are used to the real thing from north of the border I'd not recommend it.

I often crave curry, sometimes at weird times. It's not like I hate curry: I could eat it much more regularly than I do. But to want it at 07:00 is a bit unpalatable.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Another vote for Lorne sausage here. Only tend to eat them occasionally when I go to a client office in Edinburgh that has a really decent caff, or for a pre-forum walk breakfast White buttered roll with Lorne and crispy bacon..craving one right now!

You can buy these in most branches of Morrisons, at least the ones in Yorkshire I'm familiar with.

I did try a Morrisons near King Power Stadium last summer after reading on their site that they stock them in the 'bakery section' but with no luck. I'll try again. Thanks.

Swiss Knight processed gruyere cheese, produced by Gerber Foods, I think. Discontinued many years ago. I wonder is it still available anywhere in the German-speaking world?

I agree on Eggs Benedict, I'm not normally a breakfast eater but I do like this occasionally and the one time I had it on Avanti it was the best option.
Craving - sometimes cold curry the morning after really hits the spot! Otherwise steak tartare with properly cooked french fries.
And I'm making a beef & bean chilli tomorrow.

The meals I usually crave at bizarre times of the day are either a cooked breakfast (sausages, bacon, hash browns, beans, mushrooms and black pudding with some toast) or a Sunday chicken dinner.

Their website shows non-frozen ones as well, but there's no indication whether any of them are available in southern England. It'll be worth a look next time I'm near one, though my nearest branch is around ten miles away so I won't make a special trip.

I find this craving of people in England for square Lorne sausage quite amusing. My sister moved up from Lincolnshire to work in the West of Scotland nearly 30 years ago. She didn‘t like the Lorne sausage very much and often found link sausage difficult to find in the shops of Argyll. Any that was available was usually pre packed and not very good quality. When she came down to Lincolnshire to visit relatives she used to take a supply of Lincolnshire sausages back with her from a good Lincolnshire butchers.

One day. she had some people from her work place round for meal and decided to give them Lincolnshire sausages. They thought it was marvellous saying that they had never had such good sausage. For the next 20 years, every time she came down England she returned to Scotland with a cool bag full of good quality English sausages which her Scottish work friends ordered. They liked to try sausages from different butchers in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire and sometimes she would even call off and get them some Cumberland sausage from a butchers shop in Penrith.

I absolutely hate lorne.
I’ve not been very impressed with any I have had. I must admit that I don’t like any mass produced pre packed sausages. There’s so much good quality sausage available in small butchers shops and far shops in most regions of the UK. Good quality sausage with a high meat content is quite expensive these days but I feel worth paying the higher price.

Despite living Scotland I am not a big fan of lorne sausage.

As for something a crave, I love houmous. I sometimes crave a haddock supper from the chippy with chippy sauce.

Farmfoods in England often stock frozen Scotch pies.

My local (English) Morrisons bakes them fresh every other day. They are labelled as "Bell's Scotch Pies"
Our Scotch Pie Range. The Bells Scotch Pie is Widely available throughout Scotland and in Morrisons stores in England too! Please ask at the Oven Fresh counter.

What I would really like to be able to eat is Mock Turtle Soup. Seventy years ago we had it regularly. There are online recipes but now the only source of tinned MTS is from the USA (must therefore be "canned").

Even better would to try genuine turtle soup alongside the substitute version, but I'd have to go to some exotic location a long way away where they don't mind breaking conservation rules.

They’re endangered enough without you sploshing them into a soup

(I don’t know why it’s quoted like that, God knows I struggle with the quote function these days )

Scotch pies are absolutely disgusting.

Square sausage is also awful, but it’s not alone, nearly all sausages are naff.

Hummus (and falafel) is also awful.

Things that I do rate are king prawns, strawberries, bacon, roast parsnips and best of all Cromer crab.
