What exactly is going on with platform info on NRE, and when will it be fixed?

Neither the website, nor the app, are showing platform info for some stations, but they are for others. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. Clapham Junction doesn't show (which is very annoying with the number of platforms), and nor does Victoria, but other stations do. My two local stations, Kemsley and Sittingbourne do.

I used to use the ex-official (another annoyance but that's another issue) app to find out the platform number for the train home from Victoria, which usually gave me a jump on people waiting for the departure boards, but now that info is not being shown!

A message comes up that says:

Due to an issue with industry data we are unable to show platform information for trains arriving and departing at this station. We are working with our industry partners to address this as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

But it's been like this for months now!

The thing is, this is what you get for using the official app as well as LDB on the national rail site! This is what a large proportion of users are going to be using. It is good to know that other sites are showing platforms (I hadn't realised), but it still doesn't look great the fact its been broken for months for many people.

I'm curious what the problem is? Has something been changed/upgraded and the national rail site hasn't had the necessary changes made yet?

I find the platform allocation a bit random, especially at terminus stations in London

The National Rail Enquiries app gets its platform numbers from their timetable database system called Darwin which was introduced during the course of 2015.

The platform numbers are fed into Darwin by each TOC's Customer Information System, this then pushes the platform information out to NRE apps' etc. Southeastern's CIS is connected to Darwin which is why you're able to see platform numbers for Kemsley & Sittingbourne. Southern's isn't going live until some point in December which is when their platform data should be come available again.

The reason you could see Clapham & Victoria's platform numbers in the past is because it was coming direct from the timetable schedule rather than CIS, but with the move to Darwin the data will come from CIS instead.

I believe the issue was they are currently testing changes to the system which displays the live platform numbers, but oddly instead of creating a second copy somewhere on a test platform, they have just unplugged the current system and are testing the new changes on that!

Edit: there you go!

South West Trains Tyrell said:
At present, mobile phone apps and other online services such as National Rail Enquiries are not being updated with realtime alterations to platform numbers. At some stations apps show the platform number services are planned to go from, while at other stations platform numbers may not be shown at all.

How does this affect me?

When travelling, you should double check the platform number your train will go from using the traditional Customer Information Screens located around our stations. These are maintained with the latest platform information using an automated link to the signalling system, and will always reflect the most current information available.

During times when trains are disrupted this is especially important, as services can change platforms at short notice as we either work around problems such as a broken down train, or use alternative carriages to form a service.

Does this affect other train information such as the stops a train will make?

No. Information about where a train will call at is currently being supplied by a separate system which is unaffected by this issue.

Are all Train Companies affected?

This issue only affects platform numbers at stations which are run by South West Trains and Southern Railway.

Why has this happened?

Updates to platform numbers on mobile phone apps and other services are normally provided by the same system which updates our Customer Information Screens around stations. Whenever a train has a platform altered, this will be shown on station screens, and also fed via a link to the online National Rail Enquiries system (known as Darwin) which powers the majority of mobile phone apps and online journey planners used in the UK.

As part of a program to better connect our station information system to the National Rail Enquiries system we have had to temporarily disconnect this link to allow software updates and testing to take place.

When will this link be restored?

We expect the link to be restored early in the new year, once testing and upgrades have been completed.

But that doesn't explain why Victoria's are now showing up if SE's should be showing normally?

Does that mean that when it does go live the apps will show the platforms at the same time the main departure boards do and not sooner? Like previously when it guessed (using the WTT?) But wasn't always correct in the event of an alteration.

Because the CIS equipment at Victoria isn't operated by SouthEastern. It is operated by Southern. It used to be operated by Network Rail.

Yep, the platform numbers on the apps will appear at the same time as they're posted on the departure boards. For example if you look at NRE app now for Euston you'll only see an odd selection of trains with platform numbers.

I gather its the other way around - the NRE site has been upgraded, but the CIS systems operated by SWT and Southern haven't. Previously, the data shown on NRE was the timetabled information, not live information. It may have been connected to some sort of live feed, but it wasn't always accurate.
