That is incorrect. The "R" board is only to be provided if the platform is between the warning board and the speed indicator, and then only if the latter is more than 300 metres ahead of the platform. An "R" board should never be placed within a TSR.

Back in the days of late 2000/early 2001 when there were 20 mph TSRs everywhere one of the managers took it upon himself to put R boards at the end of platforms even within TSRs as he was so concerend about the risk of drivers forgetting about the TSR.

What's interesting is that someone has gone to the trouble of having special non-standard "R" boards made for this purpose without the two white roundels at the bottom, even though they don't appear in the Rule Book or any standard that I'm aware of.

Preston station has been within a TSR (30/35 Fasts, 20 slows) for a number of years now and has R boards (without spots) placed at the platform ends within the restriction. There is a reason why they were placed there even though the rulebook doesn't call for them but it escapes me at the moment

I have noticed now as well between Coventry and Birmingham both TSR's over the last 2 months a speed board has been introduced with the "R" board to remind drivers of the forthcoming speed imposed, now this put the wind up me at Berkswell, 100mph line speed, a 50mph warning board, then about 600m along an "R" board with a 50 on TOP, on with the brakes to find out this was not the start of the TSR, is this new practice or is it an incorrect indication?
