What does this "20 R" sign mean?

Just curious.
It was only installed a couple of months ago. It's immediately after the station and LC. Can't seem to find an answer via the search engines.

That is a temporary speed limit.
That sign is the warning sign, there will be a similar one further up the line which is where the restriction is effective from.

The R specifically means it's a repeater board (to remind drivers that have just stopped/crew change at the station), not a warning board placed before the restriction starts. This would be the same as the photo but without the R board (just two white dots and the speed).

It's actually looks like an old layout, railway signs says that the R board should now be placed above the speed limit (go to page 3 for the old layout)

From December 2013, the presentation was altered to place the repeating warning board above the speed indication [14.88 & 14.89] or spate indication [14.90]. The purpose of this change is to make the "R" visible to drivers before the speed indication when the board is positioned at the end of a station platform.

Just to be picky, it’s a Repeating Warning board. The R means repeat. The white circles show it as a warning.

They are placed where there is something like a station or driver change location between the warning (which is at a specific braking distance from the restriction commencing) and the Commencement board, to remind drivers of the upcoming speed restriction.

As has been said, in theory the speed nowadays should be the lowest of the signs but at least they’re all present.

So would they be placed after every station or only where crew changes routinely happen?

At every station or the end of a loop, sidings or bay platform where the restriction begins more than 300yds beyond that location. It's to remind Drivers that they have passed the warning board but haven't yet reached the restriction itself.

Presumably because there will be services (passenger and freight) which don't need to stop at said platform, and so would be within their breaking curve approaching the restiction from line speed. As opposed to accelerating away from the platform with the potential to have forgotten the original warning board.

That's interesting - I have never seen the 'new' layout. I had no idea it existed!!
