DSD GSM-R was activated and on receiving it, the signaller couldn't get any response back so an instruction was relayed to a driver coming the other way to investigate.

What's the DSD GSM-R? Is it some sort of emergency radio signal to the nearest signalling centre if the vigilance device isn't cancelled?

I'm not in any way a driver, but doesn't the GSM-R have a feature whereby the driver can press a button and all signals in the vicinity are set to danger? In this case, has the process been done automatically when the DSD pedal activation had not been done?

And no, an emegency call won't put signals to danger as simply that could be too late, but all drivers in the area will hear it and stop.

A DSD alarm should (IIRC) send out an alarm, or at least notify other drivers in the area. Putting signals back isn't a necessity, the signaller will just take the appropriate action, IE attempt to raise the driver/broadcast over PA on suitable stock, then caution any other train.

if the DSD activates (I.E. if the pedal is released or if the driver doesnt cancel the alarm with one of the inputs )an emergency call is initiated by the GSMR terminal. The emergency call doesn't set any signals to red but it does initiate a group call with all other GSMR terminals within that current cell , and any other cells if in an overlapping area .

When the DSD pedal requires acknowledgement and none is made, the brakes are applied and after 30 seconds, the GSMR (Global Systems Mobile - Railway) activates a call to the signaller. If this isn't cancelled, then the signaller will obviously answer and act on it.

There's a button on the GSMR that activates an emergency group call, which would result in the signaller broadcasting to stop all trains in an area, but DSD call isn't that.

If the DSD is released for more than 30 seconds then an alarm will sound and a message appears on the screen saying 'Preparing DSD alarm' for another 30 seconds. If that isn't cancelled, the signaller receives the alarm as a matter of priority.

In short yes. It goes to the nominated signaller if train is unregistered or not correlated with the TD or no TD. It goes to the controlling signaller if registered and correlated with the TD

They are 2 different types of call. The DSD alarm does not set up an emergency group call

Slight change to that, pressing the REC button on the cab GSM-R will send an emergency stop command to all other cab mobiles in a designated area, the signallers and NR control

There seems to be many people here second guessing. To sum this up if the DSD/vigilance is not cancelled usually for between 20 & 30seconds a loud audible alarm will sound in the cab and a test message on the display will be shown, if nothing is done by the driver in the next 20 - 30 seconds a digital signal will be sent to the controlling signaller informing them a DSD alarm is in progress. The signaller will try to contact the said driver. If this fails the signaller can relay a message through the PA system of the train, mainly for DOO trains or in the scenario in the other post request another driver to check on the train. This alarm will not affect any signals or other trains.

People need to remember that GSM-R is also used in MECHANICAL signalling areas, where signallers have to pull signals MANUALLY.

GSM-R does not set any signals to danger or caution irrespective if it is colour light or mechanical. What it does do is send a stop command to other trains if an emergency or an alarm to the signaller if it is a DSD

As a signaller I'm sure he knows that and doesn't need to be told 'how to suck eggs'...

You could have let them go a bit longer, some of the ill informed 'answers' on this thread are hilarious!
