Another one to add to the list!

I know of a lot of tickets like this. Some of which I don't advertise much because some TOCs do take pleasure in finding such anomalies and removing them, and some do read this forum! The easiest way for them to do this is putting the price up for the tickets that are cheaper, other ways would be to change the Routeing Guide (not so easy) or to request for a "negative easement". They rarely put the price down for the tickets that they have raised to be too expensive.

It is very rare that I buy a ticket from my origin to my destination. I usually either by a combination of tickets, or buy further. This is because it is rare that a ticket from origin to destination is the best value, due to the nature of our ticket system.

A ticket from York to Doncaster returning another day is more expensive than a ticket to a couple of stops after Doncaster. It didn't used to be so. Privatisation has caused many anomalies to be created (over time), and "simplification" resulted in even more!

There are quite a number of these that I regularly make use of from stations in the East Midlands. I am not going to be any more specific than this and I am not even going to make any hints as to which direction these journeys are in.
It really is best to keep quiet about them and enjoy them as long as they are still available. Mention them here and they often disappear!
One such ticket allows me to regularly travel for £26 return instead of £45 just by buying a ticket for considerably further along the line and a strange routing.

I thought it was illegal to disembark at an earlier stop to the destination on your ticket (unless of course to change to a continuing service). There was a case in point in the news recently, and the bloke got quite a lot of bother for doing just this.

So when you buy beyond where you want to go, how do you get through any exit barriers or manned exit points? Bravado?

It depends on the ticket. You can do it on most tickets except advance tickets, as most tickets allow Break of Journey

It is only 'illegal' with certain ticket types. Those that forbid break of journey such as Advance Purchase.

From the National Rail Conditions of Carriage:

16. Starting, breaking or ending a journey at intermediate stations
You may start, or break and resume, a journey (in either direction in the case of a return
ticket) at any intermediate station, as long as the ticket you hold is valid for the trains you
want to use. You may also end your journey (in either direction in the case of a return
ticket) before the destination shown on the ticket. However, these rights may not apply to
some types of tickets for which a break of journey is prohibited, in which case the relevant
Train Companies will make this clear in their notices and other publications.

Whether Train Companies 'make this clear' is open to interpretation.
