Because if I'm spending £20 on train sim 2013, I want to know what I'm getting!! DO you have to purchase routes separately?

Included standard routes are
London to Brighton (Includes 375/377, AI 450)
Sherman Hill
Munich to Augsburg (BR101, BR294, ICE 3)
Suggest anywhere apart from Steam at the moment.
Routes are completely optional although not needed.
If you can get TS2012 you will get the legacy routes & horseshoe curve instead. Although today at 5PM new details of the TS2014 are released though.

As Chris said do bear in mind that Train Simulator 2014 is just around the corner - I believe the release date is September 26th. I would imagine that you will be automatically upgraded but as it has been a while since I last played I cannot be sure.
You will be upgraded automatically come the date of release. + Free upgrade as well. Only thing you will not get is the new routes if any are included. If you do own those routes they get a upgrade to whatever new stuff is included with TS2014.

IMHO it's worth it but be prepared to have to buy DLC (downloadable content)(addons) I wait for the sales eg Christmas and summer. What sort of route/ rolling stock are you into I would be happy to recommend some to you
Yes, but I wouldn't buy it on disc. Just download it from Steam. Judging by last time it will be a long time after it comes out before it appears on disc anyway.

Class 150/2, 156, 158 are up on steam.
Class 142 Pacer is on Armstrong Powerhouse.
Sadly no 222 only a 220/221 from Just Trains.

I would recommend wcml Edinburgh to Glasgow settle to Carlisle and the units mentioned above and a few of the Armstrong powerhouse scenario packs

I wouldn't suggest buying Scenario Packs if they are just getting into the sim. AP's packs may also break the game when it becomes TS2014 and so I wouldn't recommend them right now. After TS2014 is released and everything is confirmed as being fine then I would go for them.
Also, like Just Trains, AP's work isn't on Steam. A lot of his requirements aren't either.
I would suggest all new users focus on Steam Workshop Scenarios since it's fairly foolproof and some can give a huge challenge.
As for DLC to buy, it all depends on what you want from the game. Would you prefer High Speed Passenger runs, Commuter style stopping services, Freight opportunities, a mixture of high-speed along with commuter style routes etc. Also, which country would you like content for or would you not mind as long as it fun?
I recommend E&G (Set pre 2010 as no wires on P0,1,2) But has wires up to Uphall Junction.
S&C i also recommend & i have some scenarios for that on workshop as well.

The core technology was upgraded to 2013 from 2012 from memory last year, so to do it again this year would make sense.
If you download off steam would you still have to pay for anything you already have?
I take it you can download
All DLC is just linked to your account, buying TS2014 would just install what you didn't already have and keep what you do have.

Just a heads up on this. Gamersgate are currently having a sale on many DLC, but the actual base program is only £4.99. The version Gamersgate currently sell has Sherman Hill, London to Brighton, Northeast Corridor and Isle of Wight included so if you didn't own these, it's a cheap way to obtain them.
When buying through Gamersgate, you will receive a code which is activated via Steam, it's then tied to your account just like when you buy directly from there.
