What do you do while you're on a train?

And I really used to enjoy a long distance train journeys - bring back loco hauled MK1s!

In my experience this doesn't happen often tho, except on GC HSTs. Better still if a foxy chick is sitting next to you, but this happens even less often

Dont most people. Things I do on train, annoy other passengers by listening to my headphones to loud, stick my head out of windows (MK3s) and when the train is really crowded I dump all my crap on the seat next to me instead of the luggage rack so other people cant sit next to me.

so i on a night journey find as many papers that have been dumped on the
train during the day, as i can 10 different papers is the record!
in the day i'll flirt and eat in areas i know, hope to see something interesting in places i dont!

If it's loco hauled make sure I'm in the front coach near a window (only happens on preserved railways these days), update my haulage records if it was something I reqiured for haulage
Or if I've just finished a late shift fall asleep for half an hour

I don't normally make a habit of of working much when I'm travelling, but on the way back from Eindhoven yesterday I ended up doing about 3.5-4 hours of work on a large C++ project I'm responsible for.

It's quite amazing what you do on a netbook, really.

My hero.

I generally sit in my seat if there is one available. I then alight, pretty boring really.

However, if the route I am travelling is based on a current or future project, I glue myself to the window and take as much reference information as possible.

I just gaze out of the window, usually aimlessly.

Look out for traction or freight, spotters/photographers etc.

Order some food when on ATW's WAG (Hot beef sandwich!).

And from the trip to Derby two weeks back, try not to make it obvious that I was looking at the blonde opposite on a cramped 153!

I am on a Moorgate bound FCC train and there are maybe 5 people on my carriage. RPIs got on ten minutes ago and it seems that all but me and another passenger, who is actually FCC staff, have been given PFs!

Clearly hunting isn't supposed to be THAT easy. Gets a bit boring after a while.

(And what am I doing? Well, using a laptop to access this forum at the minute!)

My habits are pretty boring really. It's a case of choosing a good seat (or finding my reserved one), then settling in to look out the window (on a new route) or reading a book, newspaper or magazine. Sometimes I listen to my iPod, but generally I prefer to travel without it, so I can hear announcements etc.

Ach, spotting der E-3 Sentry AWACS somewhere in Cheshire last July en route from Shrewsbury to Manchester, flying rather low over the landscape and approaching from the east over the train. For the spotbook: "radome not rotating".

I haven't seen Awac's Aircraft for ages.

But on one trip to London when i lived in Somerset. On the HST we saw a C130 dropping cargo/ paratroopers out of it on a training run.

Watching other passengers without them realising seems to be a common one, which i'm afraid I'm guilty of as well. When I used to commute to Huddersfield every day I worked out quite a bit about some of the 'regulars' without ever speaking to them. Other then that, I watch the passing scenery and think how I could model the various things I see and how they might fit in on my layout.
