A few years ago I saw a freight driver stop an oil train outside the buffet at platform 5 in Slough. He nipped in to get a coffee. This was on a green signal, and not very far from the signallers who may have been aware. It was about 5am and there was nothing due behind for about fifteen mins by which time the train would have been going into the Langley depot.
Yes that is a few years ago! That train often used to collect the shunter at Slough as well when I worked Slough box. --- old post above --- --- new post below ---
In the not too distant past a red light was an opportunity for the driver to nip to the shop to replenish his carry out that had been drunk or if in decent walking distance, to have a pint!
Nowadays, a good read of the newspaper is as exciting as it gets!
Drivers held in Hanwell Loop often ask how long they will be there. The is a McD'sat the bottom of the bank they like to go to! --- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I must say I've seen freight trains stuck in loops for ages and wondered if the signalman has any means of contacting the driver to say they'll get a clear signal in 5-10 minutes etc? And what happens if the light changes and the driver has fallen asleep, easily done
If I'm holding anything for any more than 20 minutes, I will tell the driver to relax and that I will call them approx 10 minutes before I clear the signal.
