What are these signs?

I saw two of these signs alongside the railway near Barking station. They're quite small (about the size of a car stop marker), mounted low down near the track and are double-sided. Both sides have a "2" above two small triangles, which point up on one side and down on the other side.

Any ideas?

They are not mileposts or car stop markers.

I'm not remotely clued up on such things but I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark anyway.

Are these near pointwork by any chance?

Perhaps, if a train is able to use 2 pantographs, it means that the driver is to raise the second one at the first sign, and drop it at the second sign? I don't know for sure and I've never seen those signs before, I don't think.

Limit of shunt for a 2-car formation on the up/down respectively?

They are 'Clay Shrinkage Area' marker boards installed in areas where at certian times of year the clay underneath the trackbed can expand or contact causing a rough ride.

The up arrows indicate the commencement of the numbered area and the downward arrows indicate the end.

As far as I'm aware they are only installed on the LT&S line and is designed for drivers to easier to specify a general location, and as the underlying cause is known it can negate the need for ESR's to be put in.
