What are Southern up to?

Not sure if Southern are up to something, but for the past few weeks 'train supervisors' have started to appear on the Dorking/Horsham via Hackbridge trains despite never being on them for at least the past year or so.

Are they sticking extra staff on trains to prove a point to the unions or something?

GTR are deploying On Board Supervisors (OBS) to all their "Southern" route services, including services that hitherto were only staffed by a driver.
