Personally I'm glad the OP isn't psychic, otherwise he would have seen all this coming and never started the thread lol

That's such an old gag! Psychics convention cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances? Crumbs, that's so old it has got whiskers on it!

In the cab with the paper
Oddly enough, I do remember driving home from Ipswich in a blizzard one evening. The weather had come on so suddenly and caught the authorities on the hop, so there were cars in ditches and fender-benders aplenty. Anyway, we had the car radio tuned into the local radio station to listen out for road closures and the like but they were just running through a list of cancelled events, one of which was an evening of clairvoyancy.

I kid you not. I mean, you'd have thought they'd see it coming.

Now you have to pay the full amount and fill in a claim form for the difference, which goes off to be approved. I can then come back and see if I can get the money back.

So you're asked to pay the higher price and appeal for the refund.. which you may not get for some technicality you weren't aware of, like not matching a lower price for the identical item because it was raining outside or it's a leap year. (maybe JL staff should become FCC revenue inspectors!)

There were some letters in the Guardian Money section about this. Customers were complaining that John Lewis were failing to refund the money because the warranty period was different (JL three year, elsewhere one, IIRC). Buying from JL with a one-year warranty was not an option. Not illegal but scarcely costomer-friendly either.

All the messing about with differebt members of staff just to get served reminds me of the bad old days at Foyle's bookshop in Charing Cross Road. First you chose your purchases (carefully scanning adjacent shelves for misplaced books) and took them to the service desk where they were wrapped and you were given an invoice; then you queued at the payment desk (more like a small cage) and paid (no credit cards accepted). The invoice was stamped and only then could you return to the desk and take your books away. I never quite understood how they managed to stay in business.

It's also a paradox. If I knew beforehand that nobody would turn up, I would not go either. If everybody else did the same, the convention would be cancelled. However, if we are all reacting to a future event, who made the decision not to turn up in the first place?

Victoria Station at 00.32am - a few years back

A very well known football commentator approaches me - I was due to take a slammer empties to Selhurst, the last Brighton train had left 4 minutes ago.

Man - Oi you?
Me - Yes, can I help?
Man where the f**k is the brighton train
Me - It left about 4 minutes ago.
Man - Why the f**k has it gone?
Me - it left on time sir.
Man - Do you know I am.
Me - no, sorry I don't.
Man - How the f**k am I gonna get to Brighton?
Me - Sorry, I don't know as the next rain is tomorrow morning, you could try to book into a hotel (by this time I had recognised who he was)
Man - Oh right and you think I want to when having a f**kin return train ticket.
Me - Sorry I have to go as I have to drive that empty train to Selhurst for tomorrow mornings service.
Man - You are a t**t
Me - (just a glare and nothing said)
Man - well?
Me - goodbye.

This was not just a passenger but a very well known person who thinks because thay are famous can abuse people, he turned up late for his train, missed it obviously and vented his frustrations on me.

Should have locked him in the empty train - would have served as a lesson! By any chance had he been on the sauce?

You know full well I cannot name and shame - I don't work for the NOW, put it this way, think of a very vocal commentator from about 8 years ago - don't hear much from him now - that's all you are getting

I can honestly say I have never experienced a hostile attitude from passengers when being asked questions I cant answer. There have been numerous occasions when somebody has asked me what platform for destination x within moments of me arriving at a station, I always just tell them I have been on the station for less than a minute (easier to do if you are train crew, I admit) and either point them in the direction of station staff or screens if I dont have time to help them or walk with them to an information point if I do.
Threads like this do highlight a small but vocal minority of rude people, but in all my years on the railway I have found 99.9% of passengers to be genuinely nice people. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I don't know. Maybe you do what a lot of my colleagues do and change ends immediately on arrival and lock themselves in the cab with the paper.

Speaking of which! I've often wondered if the driver reading a paper in your avatar is your good self or if it's just a photo you found? Curious minds and all...

Perhaps he thought I'd say that I had the information he wanted but I wouldn't divulge it to him unless he could demonstrate his membership of the secret railway brotherhood by means of saying the mysterious rites and passing to me the necessary token in the correct manner.

mysterious rites...railway brotherhood...the mind boggles

You should try being on the frontline at our Ferry terminal - where all manner of rude types come up and deliberately test your mettle! :)

Andy Gray lives in Henley in Arden so doubt he would be on his way to Brighton
Ron Atkinson lives in Barnt Green and I have met him on a few occasions and isn't the 'don't you know who I am' sort IMHO

I find it hard to believe that it would be Des Lynam who would be so uptight that he would be swearing his head off...... but in a perverse sort of way I'd be very tickled indeed if it was him!! :)
