Hi there, can anyone who have knowledge on this, explain if accommodation is provided by the train company or if it's something the individual has to sort out at their expense during the training course. I am wondering if some companies have their own accommodation and others send their recruits to hotels/b+b, or none. I am applying for a freight company at the moment and training will be too far for travelling day to day so if successful I will need accommodation near the training centre, but not aware what the general practice regarding accommodation is.

It all depends on what depot you are allocated. If the depot you are starting at is a long journey from the training centre then the company usually supplies accommodation, if the training centre is at your allocated depot then you wont get any.
As TDK has stated it all depends on the distance between your depot (not your home) and where the training is taking place, if you live near your depot then its okay but if you have applied for a depot miles away from where you live then its your problem to sort out accomodation at your own expense.
Of course it can work the other way where your depot is miles away from the training centre but you actually live quite close to the training school.

With my TOC it depends on the distance to the training centre from your home depot, I think it was over 45 mins and you qualified for accommodation when I did mine.
Sunday to Friday in a Hilton hotel with all meals included for 5 months, what more could they do?
I was very impressed, and comfortable. Having said that it's not easy being away from home six days a week, the guys who were staying the hotel with me from my course were great but I can imagine it would be pretty lonely if you were on your own or didn't get on with them.
Also I put on two stone with all that good living, as good as you try you cant help it, so a hotel with a gym would be a bonus if possible.

Indeed.... The novelty eventually wears off if you are offered full English in bed every morning paid for

Spent my summer 4 nights a week in a hotel in Cardiff..........very much miss those days! Our company paid for breakfast and dinner, so we bulked up on breakfast so we didn't need to buy much for lunch, but like others have said, it doesn't do much for your figure!

We got lunch as well, sandwich, crisps, chocolate, and fizzy drink every day, as well as the full English and £25 dinner allowance and couple of beers every evening due to the boredom of being in a hotel. Hence the two stone added. So much for driver wellbeing
Really wish I could do it all again though, it really was brilliant.
