But the LT Museum have a "complete" four car set in Acton that may eventually run again. Might as well get the scrap value from them. Not really much use for any other preservation operation.

Reading up on them- there were six full seven-car 4Vex-3Tis formations- whilst today's operational fleet is five (plus one in overhaul) two-car units. Did the line used to be much, much busier or was there a massive over-provision of capacity?

Given their condition, and the asbestos present, it's not a great surprise - at least the scrapping will yield useful components for the set currently at the museum which is apprently undergoing gradual restoration.

Regarding the supply of the Standard stock on the Island, the summer (especially saturdays ) was very busy despite the earlier plans to close the line - Brading-Sandown was still double track, Ryde Pier Head had both platforms in use and even Shanklin kept the loop and a headshunt to increase capacity. Unfortunately as more people used their cars to go on holiday the need for so much extra capacity during the summer declined though they do occasionally run 3tph (20/20/20mins instead of 20/40mins) on certain saturdays even now.

These and another couple of vehicles of this type which are also expected to be broken up at Eastleigh came from Acton so hopefully not the same ones. I believe these are from a failed preservation attempt.

Looking at this it appears not

The driving motor cars on the set to be restored are in a yellow departmental livery- so this isn't them. One of the two intermediate cars is NSE, the other is red.

These cars were sat at Acton Works for decades, there are some cars in the LTM Museum Depot which are under gradual restoration. The cars at Acton Works, I believe are from the 5-car "Heritage Train" which ran in the early 90s. There were plans to preserve that but the cars just sat at Acton Works gathering rust. The book I have lists the heritage train cars as being, LU numbers: 3706, 7296, 5279, 7281 and 3209. BR numbers: S2S, S49S, S27S, S44S, S7S. The cars pictured appear to be S2S and S7S, the two driving cars from the Heritage train. Two of the trailers were painted in mock heritage LU liveries, not sure whether they are to be scrapped as well?

Some standard stock trains were exhibited at the 1990 Morden depot open day. I assume that these are the ones at the LT Acton Depot.
