It's nice to hear there are some nice friendly drivers who would offer someone that experience

Unfortunately, there are SOME managers who would relish the chance to make themselves look good, by catching someone doing something they shouldnt be doing. 9 times out of 10, this is not a bad thing, but goes some way to explaining why staff may appear unhelpful or Jobsworthy, because sometimes it IS more than ties job is worth. I always let kids/interested adults have a look when im standing still..I enjoy it and I know they do do..its nice to see the little lads(and some girls too!) beaming when sat in the drivers seat!

Well if its not against the rules, the driver should have nothing to worry about. If it is, then the driver getting caught after being whistleblown on a forum is just the same as a DM walking onboard halfway through. This applies to all other jobs as well.

I'm not a killjoy, nor do I disagree with this driver in question - I applaud his actions and wish more were like him. But if it was against the rules, he knew the risks when he did it. Don't have a go at it being publicly revealed elsewhere.

Its not,at least with FCC..if its too hot,we can run with the cab coor to 1st class open
so could with other faults too

I once went down to Crewe (I have been since). I was about 9 and with my grandad, and we were on what I think was platform 9, and the Euston to Holyhead train arrived. It was a pendolino, and a 57/3(57309) backed onto it. The driver with the door open got out and invited me into the other end of the train, he then allowed me to relaese the air though the pendolino through the 57's controls, of course he watched me do this to make sure I did it correctly. But are you allowed to do this it was 5 years ago by the way.

I remember my first cab ride when I was 14 from york to harrogate on a class 141 I made up my mind on the journey I was going to be a driver and so it came to pass.
however nowadays if a driver has an incident they check the CCTV not just at the stations but on board the train if you have any unauthorized person in the cab (even another driver) we have been told we will be sacked.

I feel, reading these posts, alot of RailUK members suffer from paranoia.

I really do hope that the folk at TOCs have something better to do than trawl through a forum full of enthusiasts...

Unfortunately its not paranoia in these kinds cases. Managers have been well known to look through forums. The best way to think is if you dont want your manager seeing it DONT post it.

However i will say well done to the driver in this case its always nice to make a childs day and sounds very much like he did in this instance. I myself as an RPI will do my best to put a smile on a kids face i'll often let them stamp there tickets and spend a minute or 2 to have a chat. I've also know the guard to give a blast on the horn if a child is waving on the platform always great seeing the kids face light up with delight

I have to say from the OP post, that is awesome! Don't get me wrong though, I can understand the stance some of the other posters take, and it is such a shame H&S has come to that as I would love to be in a cab, especially on a Pendo to really see the tilt...though I'd settle for most trains I guess really!.
Anyone think they should do like the German ICE's and have a glass front so you can see out the front?
Again though, can understand why they wouldn't based on some of the inclidents that happen.

I do tend to have a sneaky look in the cabs when I can though, whether from the platform or on the train. Happened just today I was at the back of a 185 (near first class) so when the guard went in/out of the cab I could see in - have had it the other end too which is better since there is no toilet in the way.
Also saw into a Pendo cab while going down the WCML some time back - the guard had gone with I think a drink or something for the driver, so could see straight down the train, abeit not much unfortunately, but nonetheless!

IIf you go to places like Euston or Padd before the journey the driver ,may invite you in and show you the cab etc

May have to try that one :P

Maybe it will happen...I do have a tendancy to hover round to see what it happening while waiting for a train
Seen 185's been uncoupled a couple of times now, including this evening just as the drama unfolded of all airport trains being cancelled...just as the part of the train I came in on was about to depart for the airport!

It is a strange oddity of customary language that most large mechanical things are given the feminine inflection.

Perhaps its BECAUSE they are large, as well beastly and with a tendancy to throw hissy fits when they are not given enough attention...

I thought it was because they were sleek, sexy and exciting. Not something that can be said about an 08 or 315, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Just wanted to add, well done to the original driver concerned, its nice to hear about someone who has a soul!

This is one area where the old DMUs from the 50's and 60's were better than the 'modern' Sprinters, 158's etc. If you were lucky enough to sit at the front, you could watch the driver and see the track ahead - or you could sit at the back of the train and watch through the empty cab and see where you'd just been - disappearing into the distance. In the late British Rail era some drivers developed the habit of leaving the night blinds down so you couldn't see out - or maybe the clips that held them up had broken and nobody thought they were worth repairing!

I know it would be difficult to arrange for forward vision for passengers in modern DMU's because of the connecting corridors but it would be nice to be able to watch the track again one day. Failing that, maybe if video cameras were fitted to the front of some trains, the view ahead could be displayed on screens in the carriages!

Only ones I can think of are the TW Metro and DLR.

This is quite common on the local service units used in Japan. I wish such things were more common in the UK. See the attached pic where you might also notice that the driver has a machine beside him for issuing tickets at the more rural stations.
