Hi guys, just a query that's been bugging me.

IIRC Weymouth Quay isn't "officially" closed, so the question is who owns and manages the station? Logic would say Network Rail or Condor Ferries for the former and South West Trains for the latter but given no regular service has been on it since 1987 this would throw that theory into question. :|

Anyone have any info?

The Weymouth Quay branch closed to regular passenger services in the 1980s, it will never have been anything to do with SWT. Probably leased directly to Condor by NR.

Doesn't seem to answer the OP's question as to who actually owns and manages the harbour station. This Wikipedia page seems to suggest that the building is owned by Condor Ferries, but that doesn't seem to include the platform parts of the station; I would agree that logic suggests that the station (minus buildings) is owned by Network Rail, with the addition that as the station isn't used for railway purposes, nobody is responsible for managing the station.

Condor are no longer at Weymouth, they decamped to Poole last summer. There were reports of another operator planning to run a service to Cherbourg but that seems to have stalled, so there is the real possibility of the port being mothballed. That would leave the ownership of the station somewhat moot.

It would be sad if Weymouth port went out of use. During many visits to Weymouth over the years I got great pleasure in watching the cross channel ferries arriving and departing. As far back as Caesarea and Sarnia. I even went on a day trip on one to the channel islands and back. Oh happy days

For a period before Condor left Weymouth altogether, they used a different part of the port as their terminal because the Quay Station site had insufficient room to marshal vehicles waiting to board.

It all seems such a waste at Weymouth as a whole ferry terminal was built. I can remember when cars would be loaded by crane onto the BR Ferries and foot passengers would have to go through what was the quay Station buildings for custom formalities.

I've never been to the Weymouth Quay branch but whenever it's mentioned I post this link, which gets interesting around 2:00.

A cracking video which I've watched a few times. Each time I think of the health & safety hurdles that a heavy rail service would be up against now, 21 years on. Police bouncing cars out of the way, cars being waved past inches from the train, etc. The 33 even ran round!

I think there is abolutely no chance of that happening now funny though that video is to watch.

I was astounded by the video. The line could be reused quickly if there was a business case because its not officially closed and therefore has grandfather rights. I imagine that cars wouldnt be allowed to drive past trains though and I am not sure of the procedure to remove cars. Does anyone know how this is dealt with in Sheffield, Manchester or Birmingham? The manpower involved in the procedure looked very high. For even daily services to make any financial sense the roads would need to be pedestrianised and yellow hatched lines put across the roads that couldnt be closed. Also Weymouth station would need an extra platform to avoid having to reverse every train twice to stop at the station and then enter the line. Its all pointless without a ferry service though unless there was a case for diesel powered tram trains.

Yes, the ferries added a bit of life to the town.

Having recently walked along the streets where the railway line runs, it's staggering to imagine trains running along such a cramped, congested town centre route. From memory, the experience was like one of those 3rd world trains which crawl through the middle of towns with life going on around the track :D
