Weymouth Harbour Station

I have recently been browsing Google Earth and have noted that Weymouth Harbour Stn is still standing. Are there any plans for it as it appears to be closed up?. Or will it eventually be demolished?

It’s gone. Google Earth aerial view is not up to date, you need to move around a bit on Streetview, moving into the Pavilion car park should get you a newer view:

The track and station were removed about 4 years ago. They hadn't seen a train in the previous 20 years or so.

As a youngster it was what got me interested in railways as far as I remember, and used to spend time watching the 04's and latterly 03's working both van trains and boat trains. Car bouncing by staff and local bobbie's was quite a frequent and fun thing for a nipper to watch. Sure you know what I mean!

Absolutely!

The one time I went there and back, on a Macclesfield-Weymouth day return in the days when day returns could be bought for longer journey, there was a lot of car bouncing, even in the late 1970s. Clearly people believed the signs then just like they believe the “road closed ahead” ones I see today.

The other time I only went to Southampton because of the 73 on the front, which was unusual.

Can't remember the details now, but sometime (80/90's?) there was some event down the Quay, but prior to same we (SWD/SWT?) ran a test run down to the Quay station to prove the route, clear out any crap from the tram rails etc, and as planning staff we were invited to ride on same AFAIR. I was not in the habit of taking a camera to work, so don't have any pics of the test run.

Were you the photographer? If so, you seem to have managed an early "selfie", since I think the photographer can be seen in reflection in the wing mirror of the Austin A35 on the left. If so, was it careful placement or just a happy accident ?

The line has been lifted south of Jubilee Close.

When I went few months ago, this signal was still working, although wouldn't be able to approach it

Would that pannier just be approaching the 'new' spur with a less severe curve around the corner prior to Town Bridge? Looks as if what might be a railwayman and a-another discussing the position of a Moggy Minor?

Before anyone gets the idea that Weymouth Quay was a really impressive structure - the building behind D2280 is the Pavilion Theatre, not the station!

While the station building is indeed gone, one platform and some of the tracks are very much still there - this is a picture I took in August 2023, which slightly post-dates the Google Street View linked to above.

My attempt to get to Weymouth Quay by rail (in the early 1980's, on the way to Guernsey) was foiled because the track was blocked by vehicles which I guess couldn't be "bounced" out of the way for whatever reasons. But I did get to ride the line on the way back, and have a very clear memory of window hanging out the droplight as we trundled very slowly through the streets. No pics, sadly!

During the mid to late 1960s my earliest family holidays were all in Weymouth and I remember my Dad following the Boat Train in his car with a sign 'Keep 50ft Clear' affixed to the rear of the last coach. (I also remember him getting excited one day when he spotted Mk2 FKs in the formation for the first time!)

I finally managed to do the line on Aug 8th 1987 when the Southern Electric Group ran the 'Hastings Diesel Swansong' railtour from Charing Cross to Weymouth Quay with two units. My photos aren't easily accessible but I've found a good aerial shot on the Key Model World website which I've attached:

I went through Weymouth I think in the early 80s on a BR Manchester Rail Travel Club "day return" to St Helier. It included any train to London, the boat train to Weymouth and overnight ferry. Arrived in St Helier at 6am and left on the same day night sailing. Took 3 days there and back!

In the early 1980s DMUs still went down there on occasions and I remember cadging a lift in the cab up from the Quay. We kept well back from the loco-hauled train in front as cars and pedestrians had a habit of shooting out from behind it as soon as it passed, unaware of the DMU behind.

It was, if I remember correctly, a peak summer Sunday afternoons extension (back) of one of the regular Bristol workings. I have a feeling it went down empty to the Quay.

Another pic from the family album of D2082 on the streets of Weymouth. Summer 1966, and the leading 12T vanfit appears to be B 75999x - so a diagram 1/208 van of 1952/3 vintage? (the x being one of 0 through to 9) being out of sight due to the vertical strapping.
