Is there a temporary speed restriction at Weybridge on the down fast? Last few trains I've been on have been at line speed then braked, sometimes hard, just outside Weybridge, rolled through at (I guess) around 30mph, then barely speeding up until Byfleet and New Haw. It can then be slow sometimes all the way through to Woking, but that's probably congestion.

There has been a TSR there for roughly 10 years or more on and off - more on. I've often said that they might as well make it a PSR. I think that very few trains actually use that crossover and they could possibly remove it. I don't remember any speed restrictions there under BR but then we possibly had stronger rails built from British Steel. I don't know if the Hatfield Disaster rails were cheap steel. Pre Hatfield there were very few speed restrictions - now we hate seeing the Yellow Banana.

5.4 The Down Fast track around Welham Green curve was continuously welded (CWR11) type 113.A flat bottom rail. It was manufactured in Workington by Corus (British Steel) to British Standard BS11:1985 with a test certificate dated 24 August 1995. The track was secured to concrete sleepers by Pandrol clips every 650mm – 700mm.

Barely more than 20 mph most of the way from Woking to Weybridge this afternoon, 13 late at Waterloo.

They were temporarily removed for a while last year, before being reinstated at line speed, for all of a few weeks. There is a single ECS move in the morning booked to the crossover, from Wimbledon Park Depot to Staines. It does get used more frequently several times a year due to engineering work though, either by London Waterloo-Reading services on diversion, or by services terminating at Weybridge from Waterloo to Surbiton, which have to perform a shunt manoeuvre across that crossover and on to the line towards Addlestone.
