When the pubs at some time in the future are able to reopen I definitely won't be drinking in a Wetherspoons pub again.
What's the general consensus amongst the public?

Depends whether you mean 'going out for a drink with a range of places to choose from' or 'any port in a storm'.

Taking Shotton, purely as an example. Some 'long' connections between trains at the high level and low level platforms. Wetherspoons pub literally next door to station. Little other choice of 'decent' hostelries or cafes nearby, especially in the evening.

To be honest, apart from on here I haven’t heard the topic mentioned. With everything else going on I’m not sure many people have really noted what’s gone on there. By the time this is all over it will probably be forgotten by most. Wetherspoon pubs are simply never going to empty for as long as they sell cheap food and drink.

'Spoons pubs are huge and are more likely to be able to "do social distancing" than smaller more traditional ones, by spacing the tables out and only allowing app-based table service (they already have that facility).

What's the reason for your proposed boycott?

I have no idea how you missed the story towards the end of March. This letter from Spoonstrike (striking Wetherspoons employees) explains things in a fairly concise fashion.

“After waiting for three days for word from our head office, today we were informed that the company would pay us only for the hours we have worked up until 22nd March.

From that point on we will not receive any payment from JDW until they receive the government grant, which could be until the end of April.

Whilst other companies such as Costa have promised their staff eight weeks fully paid, Wetherspoons have left over 40,000 people without their next pay date. With no means of paying for rent, bills or food, and no warning"

Tim Martin stiffed those 43,000 loyal employees via video message, suggesting that they may want to go get supermarket jobs instead of waiting for this month's payments. Which wouldn't have likely paid their first pay packets until about now anyway. Three days previously, Wetherspoons announced increased profits of over £57m.
