Wetherspoons In Yorkshire

Hi, I may be going around Yorkshire in a couple of months and could have longish connection times in Leeds, York & Sheffield at lunchtime.

Does anyone know if there are any Wetherspoons or similar Pubs on or near the main line railway stations in the above cities? I Thought I heard that there was a new Wetherspoons right on York Station itself, but that did not come up on the website and not knowing the roads in those areas, I don't want to have to go too far from the stations. There's a new pub called the York Tap, but its not a Wetherspoons. Its where the model railway used to be if that helps.

There's a Wetherspoons on Leeds station.

The pub on York station which you are referring to is the 'York Tap': http://www.yorktap.com/

It is actually run by the same company which owns the Sheffield and Euston 'taps'. Having sampled the Sheffield one on a Saturday night last year it was a good atmosphere and I'd recommend them.

I would reccomend the Sheffield Tap at the end of platform 1, Sheffield, and the York Tap at the near end of the Scarborough bay platform at York.

Weatherspoons at Leeds is OK, but you may also want to try the Brewery Tap at Leeds which is on the station approach (out of the main entrance, turn right and walk for five mins)

There are quite a few different pubs in York which are a few minutes away from the station that are better than Spoons, such as Brigantes on Micklegate and the Maltings. 5 minute walk to both and they normally serve food, although you'd have to check the times.

Leeds has a Spoons near the Wellington Street exit, although a 5-10 minute walk away is Mr Foleys Ale House which is good and serves food.

The Scarbrough right outside Leeds station is not a bad place to spend a bit of time. If you end up in Leeds for an extended period a trip to Mr Foleys would probably not disappoint.

+1 for The Maltings in York. You just turn left out of the station and follow the road round to Lendal Bridge and it's on the right. The centre of York is very compact so there are a ton of nice pubs within easy walk of the station.

Another vote for The Maltings cracking little pub with excellent pub food (none of this fancy bistro stuff!).

Yep - The Maltings and The York Tap serve great real ale. Haven't yet sampled the other "Taps" but they're on my soon to do list. 'spoons on Leeds station can get very busy but why do a 'spoons when there are so many quality pubs within close proximity? ENJOY!

The nearest Wetherspoons to York station can be found by turning right out of the main entrance and then following the road round as it skirts the city walls. It lies directly across the crossroads you come to next to Micklegate, no more than five minutes from leaving the platforms at York station. However I would also advocate visiting the Maltings and Brigantes in York, although I wasn't aware that The Maltings served food and I think you might be hard pressed to find a table in such a small yet popular pub.

I was extremely pleased to hear that the York Tap had opened on York station: The Sheffield Tap and the York Tap are both definitely worth a look, and it gives me a little extra drinking time between trains now that their is a pub right on the platform at York!

AFAIK, the nearest Wetherspoons to Sheffield station is quite distant, so you should definitely try out the Sheffield Tap. An additional vote for The Brewery Tap in Leeds from me, too.

Aye, its probably ten minutes to the Bankers Draft at Castle Square (though there are eight trams an hour from outside the Station to the stop directly outside the pub).

Its not the best Wetherspoons in Sheffield though, the others are generally better (but not idea for a quick lunch if you are changing trains).

Many thanks for all these suggestions etc, they all sound good, especially the new one on York Station. (Maybe I will have change my travel plans to allow a longer connection, <I Wonder how many passsengers have "enjoyed" spending time sampling the various ales whcih caused them to miss their trains home etc?>)

+1 for York Tap, Sheffield Tap, also add Rutland Arms, Brown Street in Sheffield, 5 min walk from station - very good beers, decent food (although kitchen being refurbed at the mo), with awesome chocolate brownies!

AHA - a thread i AM qualified to work on! BEER!

York - start in the York Tap,whcih is right on the station and has a great choice of beer and thier pork pies are very nice! The flavours are odd but go with it. Then stroll of to the Maltings for a nice pint of Black Sheep, then head off to any of the York brewery pubs in the city centre. I would suggest either the Three Legged mare or the Yorkshire Terrier. The Brigantes is also a great pub with a nice menu

Leeds - there is a Weathers on the station but i would suggest you head for the Leeds Brewery Tap. The Scarborough is ok, the Aire Bar, which is on The Calls and right by the river is good ( Sheep & Taylors). There is also the Headly Verity in the city Centre which is also a Spoons. Mr Foleys is also worth a look

Sheefield - Cant go wrong with the Sheffield Tap.

Done it a few times at Dewsbury, having to leg it over the footbridge for the 144 to Leeds. Really need to get back down there at some point, been a while since I was in Yorkshire.

Those are two places I've been to but never had a drink in, so unfortunately I can't help. I'd like a suggestion for Donny too as I'm there tomorrow.

If you go into the Sheffield Tap there's no real need for a second pub

Plenty decent pubs in the city if you like your ale, but not many around the train station

Doncaster : Near Station, Corner Pin and Plough for real ale, both within 5mins walk (dont think either do food though).

Goole : Not good - Wetherspoons and MacIntosh Arms.

Plenty of other real ale pubs in Doncaster-inc 2 Wetherspoons, oh, and cask corner well worth visit :

aha horrible station pubs offering poor chemical refinery manufactured alcojuice masquerading as beer, cider and lager which should be avoided like the plague :roll:

I have now been to Yorkshire for the weekend and ended up having over two hours between trains in Sheffield. As the Tap on Platform 1, did not seem to be doing food, I walked through the Bus Station towards the City Centre and infact found the Penny Black located at the other end of the bus station which was very good indeed, I think it's in the Greene King chain but the menu was more like Wetherspoons. Had very good glass of wine and Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pud all for less than GBP 7.00. Nice ladies running the bar and quite a good atmosphere there too.

The Corner Pin does, The Plough Doesn't, both are very good pubs though
