Been asked by a friend the following:

" Anyone out there Re UK...that knows of a site for cheap train tickets? Re WSM to Huntingdon Cambridgeshire for 2 adults please...Some of the prices are off the roof...I could visit Spain for a week on the train prices they are quoting... we want to go on the 27th October and return either the 29th or 30th...prefer early morning or afternoon re going. But Flexible."

No railcard as far as I know.

Can anyone advise?

I recommend a Two Together Railcard, this brings the cost down to £108.20 for two people, departing early morning, or only £88.30 departing at 10:10

Train ticket prices are the same on every website. This is except for some special offers are sometimes available on the Train Company's own website (few and far between at the moment) and split ticketing website, which sell the same range of tickets, but will work out a combination of tickets if this is cheaper than one ticket. Please note that these websites charge a fee of a percentage of the saving and savings aren't available for all journeys as sometimes the through ticket is the cheapest option. I agree with @yorkie on the two together railcard.

Re visiting Spain, it's really an apples and oranges scenario. Could you fly to a given, specific airport of your choice, for that price guaranteed , even at last minute? Or do your prices rely on shopping around, committing to an itinerary and looking at different airports? I'm sure if you want to book flexlibly you'd soon find it's not much cheaper, if not more expensive, to go to Spain. It's much the same with the railways, except the off peak, anytime, etc. fares don't change and are pretty much guaranteed. If there's space available, train companies may choose to release cheaper advance tickets, but they don't have to.

It seems however that advances aren't sufficienlty available to save you money, at least in off peak times. If an airline had this scenario they'd jack up prices even more with demand. The railway that's the absolute maximum price you pay for off peak. But yes I agree with @yorkie on the two together railcard.
