Does much freight use the avoiding line at Westbury?
Planning to spend a day on the station and was hoping to see a decent amount of daytime workings…

Sometimes freight planned to use the avoiding line travels via the station, and vice versa. There have been problems recently with the up line points at Heywood Road Jn, so additional freight (and up GW IETs) have been travelling via the station.

Best to look on Real Time Trains to plan your day. A surprising amount of freight travls up through Trowbridge; not everything from Whatley/Merehead goes via the Berks & Hants. Also a number of freights reverse on the down reception line alongside the station, if travelling from the west (or the quarries) towards Eastleigh/Southampton.

Was there for about 30 mins this morning and saw a couple of freights.

Wait till the B&H closure in February, all the stone trains will go through the station.

I was down at Westbury on Friday lunchtime (yesterday), unfortunately 2 stone trains were early so I missed those (saw the tail end of both as I arrived!) and one was sent around the avoiding lines instead of running through the station.
I think Monday morning/lunchtime is busier there's a bit of work in the sidings after the weekend's engineering works.

If you can, pop around to the south side of the engineer's yard as there's a small shed there that normally has a loco or 2 present (70815 yesterday) and sometimes there's loco's parked behind the hedgerows/bushes which can be seen from the new housing estate. I cycle down so it's easy to go to these places, you could drive as there's access for a car though.
