Saturday, leaving Leeds on the 1612 Cross Country service, the conductor announced that West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Concessionary fares and passes were not valid on XC and that anyone with such a pass would need to buy a new ticket.

Whilst I agree S Yorks passes are not valid, all the publicity I can find, and Avantix, suggests that the 50p W Yorks Concessionary fare is valid for travel to Wakefield by any operator. Have I missed something, or was the conductor incorrect ?

As far as I'm aware, the LDS-WKF concessionary fare is perfectly valid on XC. Maybe it was a badly worded announcement - many seem to think they can use South Yorkshire passes or West Yorkshire passes to travel from Leeds to Sheffield, and I suspect that's what he was aiming at...

I have used West Yorkshire concessionary tickets from LDS to WKF on CC Services with no problems.
Can you use the West Yorkshire 50p Concessionary tickets on Grand Central from Bradford "International" (as it was called recently) to Wakefield Kirkgate or Pontefract Monkhill I wonder ?

That makes sense.

Was the service diverted via Barnsley?

No

Sounds like another XC train manager making up his own rules. Metro passes, dayrovers etc, have always been valid on all trains in West Yorkshire.

Was abit unsure about GC, but thanks Deerfold for saying that.

Can a suggest you email Metro about it. Its something that they need to know I think. I dont like to think that this guy wrongly excessed people going from Leeds to Wakefield.

Probably because before the national card came in there was a very generous concessionary fare between South and West Yorkshire (more than either in-county one but still very cheap).

Apart from MetroCards, which are not valid for cross-boundary travel with a season ticket on XC, EC and EMT.

Yep I think it was probably just a badly worded announcement, South Yorkshire passes entitle passengers to free trips into West Yorkshire on Northern Rail services only, however passengers try and push the boundarys by using them on express services. Also passengers on West Yorkshire or South Yorkshire passes try to use the tickets splitting at stations beyond Wakefield even though these aren't valid. Just like when passengers try to use XC trains with West Yorkshire passes trrying to split their ticket at Micklefield

Tell me about it! In fairness, there are probably a few that genuinely don't understand, although there's also a few that are blatantly taking the p###! Not a Yorkshire related incident, but I have recently caught somebody using a Derbyshire one trying to go a fair way south from Birmingham! Unbelievable!

Doesn't excuse the fact for an annoucement such as that. Some guards seem to have a script of their own when it comes to tickets and restrictions, and only adds to the confusion. Same problem up here when trying to get Northern guards to accept Metro tickets and Gold Cards on journeys where they are valid.

Apart from MetroCards, which are not valid for cross-boundary travel with a season ticket on XC, EC and EMT.

Thats fair enough. On XC, EC & EMT Wakey is the boundary.

Ive seen some try using South Yorkshire passes well into West Yorkshire & also up the Settle and Carlisle!!.

Who knows what exact announcement was made, it may be badly worded or misheard

West Yorkshire concessionary fares are valid on all operators for journeys wholly within that county. The same applies within South Yorkshire

XC are clearly having training & management issues with their newer staff.

Did you not read a few posts further up, it may not be clear what the announcement actually stated (except from what the OP heard) but it definately seems to allude to those passengers who travel Leeds to Sheffield. South Yorkshire passes are only valid in West Yorkshire on Northern Rail services, and WY passengers like to push their luck with split tickets as already mentionned

Well, I can tell you that pinned up in Leeds messroom are the two leaflets regarding what the SYPTE and WYPTE passes are valid for! If you care enough about revenue to make an announcement before departure, you'll clearly care enough to have read those leaflets, so therein lies the reason I'm quite surprised that a Leeds-based crew would claim that a WYPTE concession fare isn't valid on XC!

Can't see it being Leeds crew to be honest. It's gonna be a Geordie or one from Brum.

Besides if theres a gate on at Leeds, apart from 1st class - who bothers with revenue after Leeds? If it were me I'd be pestering the trolley dolly for a brew until Sheffield (allegedly)

I'm pretty sure the 1612 is booked for a Leeds TM. Used to be a Birmingham job... Oh, and full check after Wakefield matey!

I find this attitude (not just yourself, but from many others nationwide) that just because there are ticket gates it automatically means everyone has a valid ticket, somewhat bizarre. I take a fortune in fares from Leeds. Many are Advance tickets on wrong train, no or out of date railcards, adults on child tickets or people purchasing 50p WYPTE concession fares from the SSTMs when they aren't entitled to use them. The gates do not check validity of tickets, nor do they check those that have come off local connecting trains. They are a help, but certainly don't rely on them to ensure everyone has a valid ticket. I know people who use the installation of gates as an excuse to say "everyone will have a ticket, why should I bother?" and then just sit on their backside in the back cab. Thereby giving TOCs another excuse to get rid of "lazy" guards.

Quite - I regularly change at Leeds but rarely start or finish there. If I didn't already have a through ticket I'd potentially get a lot of free rides.

There are some people who do take the ****, sometimes they either don't understand or sometimes they are just trying to get away with it.

I wasn't on this train but have been on some XC and other operators' trains in WY and have heard announcements that have been incorrect. I also know that Metro get complaints in about this sort of thing.

Should be some sort of standard announcement for this sort of thing written at head office, checked to make sure it is correct and then given to all guards. No problems there unless the guard messes up the announcement.

Something like "West Yorkshire Metro products are only valid on this service as far as Wakefield Westgate, and Travel South Yorkshire products are not valid on this service" would suffice (as long as the train isn't going via Doncaster!).

Exactly, no confusion there, anyone who gets on trying to use it has to pay for another ticket.

Reminds me of a time when I got on a LDS - KGX train and a guy got on at Westgate. He had a WY Day Rover and assumed that Doncaster was in West Yorkshire, but also looked sloshed at 8 in the morning. Guard let him off but expect he had to pay to get back to Wakefield.
