I'm in London for a couple of weeks and have a West Midlands issued Concessionary Bus Pass, which I got 2 years ago and which works fine on buses I have caught on various trips around England such as Liverpool, Devon and Cornwall in recent months, as well as in the West Midlands.
However, I've already caught 3 buses in London, all TFL buses around Bounds Green, Muswell Hill and Camden, at valid after 0930 times and each time I press it on the reader, it goes red instead of the green acceptance light.
Any ideas, as I expected my bus pass to be valid on TFL buses?

This is an issue that crops up regularly. It's fine, your pass is still perfectly valid. It's just the way TfL machines are set up, they don't recognise (most?/all?) non-TfL issued passes. Just show your pass to the driver as you board.

Whilst it has got much better, it's not entirely unheard of for passes issued by one local authority to not scan on machines elsewhere in the country, despite being valid.

The ticket machines on TFL buses recognise ENCTS passes issued by London Councils only. No other councils ENCTS passes will work on them. The issue is that TFL are using very old ticket machines (around 25 years old now) that are not ITSO compatible and do not recognise ITSO cards. They are only compatible with the very old Oyster technology. London Councils specifically make their ENCTS passes compatible with both Oyster technology so they can be read on London buses and ITSO technology so the can be read on non London buses. But every other council in England make their passes compatibles with ITSO only so London buses can not read them. But as mentioned this is a known issue so anyone with a pass issued by anyone other than London Councils can simply show it to the driver and they manually record it by pressing a button on their ticket machine.
