Ok, since one has been done for Greater Manchester, lets see what suggestion we come up with for road, rail and light rail improvements in the West Midlands Metropolitan area as well as wider region. Be as realistic or as imaginative as you like.

To avaoid confusion, it might be worth posting whether or not your improvements are pre or post HS2.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Post HS2,I would start with a timetable re cast on the Birmingham - Coventry line.

Both cross country services to Reading per hour would run via Coventry and would stop at a new station at Kenilworth. The line would be double tracked between Leamington and Kenilworth.

There will be 2tph calling at all stations between Birmingham New Street and Coventry with 1tph at Adderley Park. These trains will start at Aldridge giveing the Walsall area a direct service to the airport.

There will be a 2tph semi fast service from New Street to Euston calling at Marston Green, Birmingham International, Tile Hill, Coventry, Rugby, Northampton, Wolverton, Milton Keynes Central, Bletchley, Leighton Buzzard, Berkhampstead (1tph), Hemel Hempstead (1tph), Watford Junction and London Euston.

There will be 2tph from Wolverhampton to Euston calling at Sandwell and Dudley (1tph), Birmingham New Street, Birmingham International, Coventry, Rugby (1tph), Milton Keynes Central, Watford Junction (1tph) and London Euston.

The cross city line will be extended to the south with 3tph to Redditch (requiring a passing loop at Alverchurch) and 3tph to Bromsgrove with electrification, station redevelopment with 1 or 2 bay paltforms and platform extensions on the mainline.

To the north, there will be full redevelopment of Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks and Lichfield City stations with 6tph running to Lichfield Trent Valley (requiring a second paltform and cross over). There would sill be 2tph on the cross city line calling at Duddeston and all station north of Aston would get 6tph except Shenstone and Buttlers Lane which would get 4tph. The bay paltform at Four Oaks would be demoleshed as part of the re-development and the land sold for housing.

All trains on the cross city line will be fromed of 6 coaches.

On the Walsall/Chase line, a fourth platform will be constructed at Walsall and the line four tracked to Ryecroft junction. The line from Walsall to Aldrdige will be electrified and a new station built at Aldrdige with two non electrified through platfroms and an electrified west facing bay platform. There will be a 2tph all stations stopping service from Aldrdige to Birmingham New Street, extending onto Coventry.

The Chase Line will be elctrified with all station being fully re-built north of Walsall. All platforms will be of four car length with ticket offices at Cannock and Hednesford. A 2tph week day off peak service will be reintroduced with stops at Bloxwich, Bloxwich North and Landywood.

The new Birmingham Curzon Street station will have additional platforms for local trains. from Curzon street, there will be 2tph to Tamworth calling at Fort Parkway, Castle Bromwich, Water Orton, Kingsbury, Winecote and Tamworth. There will be improvement to facilites at Winecote and Water Orton, a re-modelling of the Water Orton area with a third platform and a cross over and south facing bay platform at Tamworth. The line will also be four tracked between Water Orton and Landor Street with the Birmingham - Leicester service only calling at Water Orton in the peaks.

Another 2 tph will run from Curzon Street to Wolverhampton via Walsall. These trains will call at Fort Parkway, Castle Bromwich, Walmley, Maney Hill, Sutton Town, Streetly, Aldridge (hence the trough platforms), Walsall, Pleck, Darlaston James Bridge, Willenhall and Wolverhampton. Will require a new bay platform at Wolvehampton.

The Manchester - Stoke stopping service will be extended to Birmingham New Street calling at Stone, Stafford, Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street. This service could possibly form one of the 2tp semi fast New Street - Euston services depending on timings at Euston.

There will be a new station at Brinsford Parkway served by the half hourly Birmingham - Liverpool service.

There will be at least one extra train in each peak between Birmingham and Shrewsbury calling at all station between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury.

The South Staffordshire line will be re-oppened between Stourbridge and Walsall and will be fully double track. This will be the principle freight route between the South West and North East. In conjunction with the Sutton Park line, it will help take some freight trains off the Lickey Incline and Camp Hill Line. This will also require the Stourbridge - Worcester line to be re-signaled and the Worcester area to be re-modeled.

The Boardesley cord will be built as well as an extra bay platfrom at Moor Street. There will be a 4tph service from Moor Street to Kings Norton calling at Moseley, King's Heath, Cartland Road and King's Norton. King's Norton station will need to be remodeled with the island platform being brought back into use.

All platforms on the Snow Hill lines should be able to accommodate 6 car trains. ALthough I don't propose any timetable changeso on the Snow Hill lines, some peak time trains need to be extended and extra stop at Lye, Old Hill and Langley Green are needed in both peaks. There will also be an hourly service at Hartlebury throughout the day.

There will be a half hourly service between Great Malvern and New Street in the off peak. All Birmingham - Worcester trains (incuding those starting/terminating at Malvern and Hereford will call at Bromsgrove, but not at University. Passengers will be able to conect with Cross City line services at Bromsgorve.

The line will be double tracked between Ledbury and Hereford with a small depot built at Hereford so that the first train to Birmingham in the morning can run an hour earlier and the last train from Birmingham in the evening can run and hour later.

The hourly Nottingham - Cardiff service will skip the stop at University and make extra stops every hour at Bromsgrove and Ashchurch for Tewksbury.

In the north of the region, thee last train in each direction between Stoke and Derby will run two hours later than at present.

The Redditch and Bromsgrove plan is already in existence, although I'm not sure how that's faring with spending cuts and whatnot.

Is there a need to fully redevelop Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks and Lichfield City? They seem fine as they are to me? And I don't think there's a need for 6tph to Lichfield Trent Valley - the present 2tph are not busy, and even that extends to 4tph in the peaks. I would extend the Four Oaks terminators through to Blake Street, giving 6tph to Butlers Lane and Blake Street, with 2tph remaining (4tph in the rush hours) at Shenstone.

Then if you really need 6tph at Lichfield, run two additional services from Birmingham via Walsall and a newly reopened South Staffordshire Line to Lichfield City (and Lichfield Trent Valley if necessary).

Again, no need to demolish the bay platform at Four Oaks - it can be kept for peak extras and service disruptions, you wouldn't get any houses on it anyway!

:)

Of course, capacity for these trains would probably be an issue, but they're just ideas.

Hmm, makes me think that the "Greater Manchester" improvements are generally infrastructure related (electrification, Ordsall Curve etc) whilst the "Greater Birmingham" improvements are generally train related (new 170s, new 350s, new 172s)...

A few that I agree with

  • Electrification of all "gaps" like Coventry - Nuneaton and Walsall - Rugeley
  • Double track of Coventry - Leamington (which should encourage the case for electrifying this line once wires reach Oxford and there's then a good case for allowing dual-mode EMUs all the way from Manchester to Bournmouth with a few short gaps sorted out)
  • I'm in two minds about electrification from Wolvehampton to Shrewsbury. It's not *that* far, it'd allow direct London services, it'd allow some of the current New St - Wolves services to extend to Telford (I think there's potential there). However, that would mean cutting some of the existing services from Birmingham to Wales (to allow more EMUs to run)
  • Try to avoid services terminating at New Street and taking up all that platform space for so long (e.g. extend the Nottingham - Birmingham shorts to Hereford? extend the Euston - New St services onto the New Street - Glasgow/Edinburgh services?)

I would also suggest that dedicated platforms for Cross City line trains along with Wolverhampton - Walsall via Aston local trains and Birmingham - Wolverhampton local services should be constructed underneath Birmingham New Street.

Why are you just regurgitating what is in the RUS ?

Kenilworth is still shakey at best. All the Water Orton corridor stuff I have said several times is not going to happen.

Bromsgrove and Redditch are pretty much dead certs though the design of Bromsgrove is still not decided.

Walsall doesnt need a fourth platform and really doesnt need four tracking to Ryecroft. Aldridge is probably the best shout of anywhere to get a new station.

Brinsford is very unlikely as they cant get planning permission for the proposed housing is the last I heard.

Stourbridge to Droitwich is resignalled next year. Re-opening to Pleck and on to Brownhills is a long way off, if ever.

XC have been after going via Cov for all services for ages now, but you only need a partial re-doubling to do it, not all.

Electrification of the Chase should be much higher on the agenda purely for diversionary purposes and engineering access.

I would electrifiy the Snow Hill Lines!
Then if the number of paths into New St is still limited after rebuilding, I would propose an expanded Moor Street, which would be a cheaper and easier proposition than another rebuilding of New Street. Moor Street can be expanded over the New St lines to make Moor St about 10 platforms large. With these extra platforms, I would:
  • Divert all local Coventry - Birmingham trains to Moor St with a remodelled Bordesley Chord. All XC services will call at Coventry then onto New St.
  • Camp Hill line re-opened so 3 tph Kings Norton to Moor St
  • Divert Hereford services via the Camp Hill line to Moor St. University would lose 1tph to New Street but this would be countered by an increase in frequency on the Cross-City line.
If Snow Hill could be expanded I would divert current local Wolverhampton - Brum services via Soho Jn and a new Jn to the Snow Hill lines. All this would mean that New St becomes primarily an InterCity station, with only Chase line and Cross City line services, whilst Moor St and Snow Hill become larger local termini. Interchange between Moor St and New St would be significantly improved to allow easy interchange between local and InterCity services.

I very much like the idea of Moor Street being a local station and New Street being a regional and inter city station. There would still be some anomolies though. stations like Cosely would get 2tph to Snow Hill/Moor Street and 1 tph to Moor Street, Telford Central will get 1tph to Snow Hill and 1 tph to new Street and Walsall will get 2tph to each. I know which station most passengers would rather travel to. Unless of course you totaly re-develop Moor Street station and incoporate it into an extension to the Bull Ring Shopping Centre and then Moor Street and New Street stations would technically be part of the same building.

You can also add an etra cord at Soho (not sure about how much land will be required, and how many houses will need demoloshing) to get 2tph off the Chase Line into Moor Street.

There will however be a 12tph using the Snow Hill tunnel. From Moor Street heading towards Snow Hill there would be 1tph to Snow Hill (from Marylabone) 2tph to Worcester, 2ph to Kidderminster, 2tph to Stourbridge, 2tph to Wolverhampton, 2tph to Rugeley and 1tph to Shrewsbury.

You could keep the current number of through platforms at Moor Street because to the south east of Moor Street you could have 3tph to Marylabone (2 starting at Moor Street and 1 at Snow Hill, as per present), 4tph to Dorridge, 4 tph to Whitlocks End with hourly extensions to Stratford and 3tph to King's Norton. This would make all trains using the Snow Hill tunnel Cross City services with the exception of 1tph terminating at Snow Hill. You would need at least 2 new platforms for the Coventry and Euston London Midland services to the North East of the through platforms and the station would need to be redeveloped so that the through platforms can be widened to accommodate increased passenger numbers.

Stourbridge to Droitwich is resignalled next year.
I thought it was Stourbridge-Hartlebury; that Droitwich was remaining semaphore to be resignalled at the same time as Worcester area.

Now to unleash my ideas:

  • Electrify Walsall-Rugeley Trent Valley and convert all Chase line services to EMU operation. This will also provide a diversionary route for WCML trains and freight.
  • Following the reopening of the South Staffordshire Line introduce hourly Worcester-Walsall service. Or also reopen line from Walsall-Lichfield then a Hereford-Derby service can be run (also providing a diversionary route for freight and as a way of avoiding Birmingham.
  • Following the new Bordesley chords (assuming they'll be built), introduce a 1/2 hourly service from Moor Street to King's Norton. Also I'd divert all BHM-HFD services via the Camp Hill line into Moor St; the loss of University can be negated by changing at (a new) Bromsgrove station and improved Cross-city services
  • Introduce 1/2 hourly off-peak service from B'ham to Hereford
  • Electrify Snow Hill lines and convert to EMU operation, sending 172s up north (maybe to) directly or indirectly replace pacers. Introduce up to 8tph in buisiest stretches or lengthen all trains to a minimum of 4 carriages. Also electrify Bromsgrove-Droitwich Spa following Snow Hill electrification and convert Birmingham (New/Moor St) to EMU operation.
  • Unlikely: Reopen Stourbridge Jct to Wolverhampton and (reopen Wolves Low Level?). This would allow a variety of new passenger services as well as an important freight route between the South-west and the North-west.

Bit off topic (?) but I would like to see a Leeds (or NE) to Birmingham service running via Manchester. Lots of new journey ops there..... (No track space in Manchester no doubt?)

Scrap HS2 for starters (but that's another story).

*Electrify Coventry to Nuneaton
*Coventry to Leamington Spa
*Built Kenilworth railway station and redouble the line.
*Extend Nuneaton to Coventry to Leamington Spa, maybe even upto Warwick/Solihull/Startford with a cab change at LMS.
*New units to operate this service, 323s or 321s would be dandy.

Perfectly possible, if the Bournemouth - Manchester service runs on to the Manchester - Hull service (tagging two routes together meaning no additional paths needed etc).

It'd probably be a nightmare to time/ maintain, of course, but it would provide an alternative Birmingham - Leeds route

Birmingham 09.57
Manchester 11.39

Manchester 11.42
Leeds 12.36

(three minutes at Manchester looks tight, but bear in mind the slack in the XC service which takes twelve minutes from Stockport to Piccadilly compared to eight/nine minutes southbound)

The problem is that this would be overtaken by the "via Sheffield" XC service which is half an hour faster...

Birmingham 10.03
Leeds 12.01

...otherwise it'd be an alternative route from Leeds to the West Midlands.

(yeah, I know, different TOCs, never going to happen, quicker via Denton etc etc)

Plans I've seen show 76/77 staying but the distant goes to be replaced by a new 3 aspect LED job WMSC side of the fringe;)
DS77 is the up main distant
DS76 is the up main (for the loop)

Could it be there's going to be a new intermediate signal?

Also are these plans publicly available? I'd like to see what is being planned

I like Metrailway’s idea but I would go one step further and convert the Midland Metro to heavy rail and transfer services from the Stour Valley line entirely rather than just the Soho to New St section. At the Wolverhampton end the line would continue beyond Priestfield and join the Stour Valley line roughly where it crosses the A454 (about half a mile south of Wolverhampton Station).

All services to Shrewsbury and beyond would be diverted onto this route, as would the Manchester to Reading XC services.

I would introduce a 20 minute frequency Moor Street to Wolverhampton service with roughly half the number of stops as the metro, something like: Moor Street - Snow Hill - Jewellery Quarter – Winson Green – The Hawthorns – West Bromwich – Wednesbury – Bilston – Priestfield – Wolverhampton.

Additional capacity at Wolverhampton would be provided by converting platform 4 to an island platform. In order to make room for this, Wolverhampton power box would be demolished and a replacement built just to the north of the station,

At the same time I would four track Moor Street – Dorridge and Snow Hill – The Hawthorns.

All somewhat unrealistic I know but what the hell :)

I stand corrected 75/76 stay, 77 goes and no they are not in the public domain. I had a chance to view them.
Bit odd it's just that one, I wonder why they're taking that one and not any others. Darn, I would have like to have seen those plans ;)

If this country's government was possessed of a greater commitment to improving our disgracefully inadequate REGIONAL [note key word] rail transport infrastructure all of 20 years ago before privatisation (just think of how much cheaper some big scale projects would have been if they stopped dithering back then and just got on with the job - after all, everything is unaffordable and unsustainable NOW isn't it??), not to mention stopped being quite so London-centric - we would have seen new deep level platforms now built beneath Birmingham New Street for the benefit of the Cross City/suburban through routes, which would have been accessed via a new diversion off the existing former West Suburban route just before Five Ways station along the former goods line to Church Road depot - with new platforms serving Five Ways itself before dipping into a tunnel and entering a new deep level station at [stn]BHM[/stn] comprised of four platforms....only to re-emerge east of Curzon Street goods depot to rejoin the Grand Junction line towards Duddeston.....

New Street would not be the hideous bottleneck it has been for the last 20 years as a result of a little more forward planning. As it stands, Railtrack/Network Rail's unfathomable decision to turn down the chance offered to them on a plate from the new Bullring developers of adding two extra east-approaching tracks from the Coventry direction may well be the single biggest oversight they have made.

It goes without saying that quadrupling the line between Birmingham and Coventry/Wolverhampton should have been approved and put into action along with the recent similar widening of the Trent Valley route through Tamworth and Lichfield....but oh, no, this is Birmingham we're talking about, not London...... we mustn't lose sight of the fact that Birmingham is well and truly a Cinderella city in terms of its completely inadequate train/metro/road network. If London wants a complete rebuilding and enlargement of any of its central stations, it somehow always seems to get it eventually....but good old Birmingham can bloody go and whistle.

That ^^ is the sort of attitude that has hamstrung ANY prospect of proper and sustainable expansion and redevelopment plans for our second city for so long now....and will probably continue to do so for the rest of time.

HST2 is merely an expensive and completely unnecessary folly [or distraction] that serves only to paper over the deep-seated cracks and highlight the antiquity of the rest of the existing, creaking, network. Isn't that correct?? Of course it is!!!

Said it before and I'll say it again, but I am fairly sure HS2 is just a ruse to get London a 6th airport by proxy. If HS2 means Birmingham International can be less than 40 minutes from Euston then it is as close to the capital as Stansted Airport is. It is all about attracting more business to the capital.

It's not rocket science though is it? That practically every regional railway improvement that does get government approval is just so that London can benefit from it. HS2 is just the icing on the cake really...... but I am very very sceptical that it will benefit the rest of the country. The ONLY reason for it to exist is just that - speed. There are absolutely no other intrinsic benefits at all.

For instance, consider this - is it going to offer good value for money?

Pffft!

Dream on.....!!
