West Midlands Day Ranger ~ Any advice please

I am planning on buying the £20 west midlands day ranger ticket for a full day spotting at many different midlands locations.

As I have never been spotting anywhere south of Stafford befor, so any advice of getting the most of the day ranger ticket woukld be appreciated.

I plan on getting the 9.01 from Crewe to Birmingham and spending the full day traveling around, so does any have any advice on good spotting locations and getting the the maximum number of different train companies / train types to ride on.

Would personally look at going to Leamington Spa/Gloucester for max train operators.

You could get LM/VT/XC/FGW/CH/ATW !

Its not valid to Gloucester.

Personally i'd look at going to Worcester for a FGW HST to Hereford and possibly doing the Chiltern LHCS that run off BMO.

The South West Trains 158 can sometimes appear on the 1051 Great Malvern to Brighton, of which you can catch to Worcester.

Whatever you end up doing, its excellent value.

You can't beat Tamworth for freight

Birmingham New Street - Great Malvern is recommended for a FGW unit back to Worcester.

Unless you go early for the FGW HST to Hereford that could end up taking most of your day

West Mids Day Ranger does not go past Worcester / Hereford so cannot make Gloucester!

A lot depends on what you want to do in the West Mids. Good spotting locations for freight can be Nuneaton, Tamworth & Walsall in addition to Leamington or if you are after units Snow Hill (also see Midland Metros) or New Street (though requires plenty of walking).

You can also use the rover to travel on the Chiltern loco hauled services between Moor Street & Leamington Spa (10:55 & 15:55 off Moor Street or 14:50 ish off Leamington).
