What's the best ticket to buy for a journey starting in Redditch, going to Rugeley via new street, then Trent valley line to Litchfield, then back to Redditch? Leaving today lunchtime. A return ticket Redditch to Litchfield is more expensive then to Rugeley, so would that be acceptable? We are one adult plus one child, with a FF Railcard. Many thanks.

I am by no means an expert on ticket routing, but NRE says that an off peak day return from Redditch to Rugeley TV is valid via Lichfield and via Walsall. So whereas an off peak day return from Redditch to Lichfield TV has a higher fare, to my untrained eye, and anomalous is it might appear, it looks like you can do your bash on the cheaper Redditch-Rugeley return.

Just a quick update, did the trip yesterday, took four WMR trains. Didn't see a single guard, let alone have a ticket check!

The guards are very, very rarely seen on CrossCity services. The 323 trains only have one guard's panel in the middle of the train and it seems the guards daren't venture out to meet the lovely locals ;)

In about 2,000 journeys I've made on the line, I've had a ticket inspection once!
