Planning a trip to the west midlands, likely to be sometime in June, WMDR will be in full effect, due to overwhelming great swathes of requirements both on D & EMU's front. Been tipped to hit Water Orton for a variation of units and freight. I definitely want to squeeze in at least 1 return trip on the Chiltern loco hauled 68 to Leamington Spa too, 1 there, 1 back. Before cramming in as much as humanly possible. Hoping to get a bit bashing done too, Any tips are most welcome, trust me, a lot of the midlands stuff is a blank page.
Also 1st day i intend, check in, then to go over to Nottingham, spend a bit time on the station but inbetween that, I'd like to get Toton bankside, mainly to see 60093, last one, although I wont ignore what else is on view. I was wondering if anyone has any idea if said loco is in a place I can see it and if anyone can give me directions how to get over there by bus, a landmark to look/ask for and directions to get to the bank side. Last time i went there was on an enthusiasts bus trip about 15-20yr ago.
Sorry for so many questions but folk on here normally come up trumps.

Can't help with Toton I'm afraid, nor 60093.

As for the West Midlands, I am more able to advise! Let's start with the 68s, now I'm not 100% certain yet as the diagrams may be changing in May so check in with that one nearer the time, but you should be able to do the 1055 from Moor Street to Leamington Spa for a short wait onto another Silver going north to Moor Street. There are a good few Silvers out during the day but that move is the one that I can remember. Worth pointing out I'm posting this on the way to work so not easy to check this things, provide times etc. The timetable is a good way to check what's loco-hauled though, as above those services will be a small black box with a white MS on top of it. Those services are booked for loco haulage but as always it is subject to availability. Yes it does occasionally happen with a 168 substituting!

While on the Snow Hill lines, you've got 2-hourly Chiltern 165s on stopping Moor Street to Leamington Spa services, normally this is the same 165 during the day. Onto LM on the Snow Hill lines, through the core section you've got 172s every 10 minutes in each direction. Every 20 minutes to Dorridge (one of which every hour continues to Stratford-upon-Avon via Hatton North Curve), every hour to Stratford via Whitlocks End, another two trains an hour terminating at Whitlocks End too. In the peaks you'll also have some Dorridge services extend to Leamington Spa. Going the other way you've got 172s going to Stourbridge Junction (terminating), with others terminating at Kidderminster and others going to either Worcester Shrub Hill or Foregate Street. Every 30 minutes to Worcester at least (I'm doing this without timetables to hand to check, so I may have missed stuff out), with a few trains extending to Great Malvern.

350s, you've got them every 20 minutes from New Street to Euston with different calling patterns so make sure you have a timetable with you! They all call at Marston Green, International, Coventry, Rugby, Long Buckby and Northampton though. Talking of, it may be worth popping out that far to view what's on DIRFT (left hand side heading to Northampton, not long after diverging onto the Northampton loop), DRS 66s and usually a 92 as well. There is an 08 on there too but it's pot luck as to whether you see it or not. The evening peak sees some 350s only get as far as Coventry before returning, so check your timetable there.

Other 350 options exist on Wolverhampton to Walsall (via New Street) locals every 30 minutes, as well as on the half-hourly New Street to Liverpools. Don't forget the Trent Valley too, which is normally a mix of /1s and /3s.

150s, only one diagram in the Midlands, which may change again by the time you come down so check in nearer the time.

I've got tons more to add, but got to get off the bus and get to work now, however I'll try and add the rest at the first available opportunity!

Water Orton is probably the most horrible station in the WMDR area so avoid it.

As for the Chiltern loco hauled sets the times off Moor Street are 10:55, 12:55, 13:15 and 15:55. If you go for the 10:55 I would change at Leamington where there is a plus 1 but Warwick Parkway if you don't want to risk missing the connection. The 12:55 would mean an hours wait at Leamington and the 13:15 is a plus 30. I wouldn't go for the 15:55 as it is an hour and 40 minute connection at LMS.

There's nothing wrong with Water Orton so long as you're not looking to use a ticket office. It's in the middle of what strikes me as a fairly affluent and rural area and it is a mecca for enthusiasts due to the frequency of freight traffic that passes through. If I had to choose a word to describe it I'd be going for "tranquil", personally. I would rather spend time there than at, say, Dudley Port or Stechford in the West Midlands if I had to make a choice.

Conversely that is one of my favourite jollies, as it gives me a decent amount of time in the pub in the middle (and I can just about tie it into the rigmarole of a standard working day). :D

Granted that's not much use if your trying to fit in maximum train travel, though.

I heard Water Orton was alright, I guess its about opinions, sprinterguy, seems to back up, what i was told but many thanks for your opinion too, better to be safe than sorry, many thanks for the the info though fishquinn.

Sounds like a plan, hopefully I'll get a chance to get a gargle somewhere.
Many thanks folks for the info to date, very much appreciated indeed, any other snippets of info are most welcome too, the more info I have, the more i can collate, I can form some kind of plan round it.

Toton - there are bus services from Derby & Nottingham to Sandiacre, or to Long Eaton town centre, from where you can walk to the bank above Toton Yard. Search Trent Barton bus company website for timetables. It is a longer walk from Long Eaton rail station, which is about 10-15 minutes walk south of the town centre.

Also allow about 10 minutes to walk between rail & bus stations if travelling from Derby.

Not got the time tonight to continue my very long post about moves in the Midlands, but I can also vouch for Water Orton. It's not a bad place, I spent a while there a couple of years and had no problems at all. Certainly it's better for stuff coming from the west though, what with the bridge at the east end making photos very awkward. Nothing in the area much shops wise so make sure you take supplies with you!

I'll continue my thorough advising tomorrow hopefully!

Mmkay, time for a bit more now I've got data signal again!

323s, as I'm sure you'll already know, work the Cross City line from Lichfield TV to Redditch. Through the main bit of the line, Longbridge to Four Oaks, there's 6 trains an hour in each direction. A lot of single sets but also some pairs too. I'm not sure if it still happens, but I think the timetable has a headnote saying what's 3-car sets and which are 6-car sets (singles and pairs obviously). There are still a few services, or at least there was, on Walsall to Wolverhampton locals that have 323s on them. 0719 Wolverhampton to Four Oaks is one of them, but the rest could have gone over to 350s by now.

One of my favourite moves for 323s is New Street to University. Only 10 minutes at the most each way, usually around 8. This way you can also scoop 170s with both LM and XC. XC 170s are only hourly (Nottingham to Cardiff Central services) in both directions, and I seem to recall the plus between a southbound and northbound one is awful. LM 170s are hourly from New Street to Hereford, with some extras in the peaks too. Some 170s are 2-car 170/5s, some are 3-car 170/6s and some are paired with a 153 as well. One such service is 1549 BHM-HFD, 1740 return and 1919 to HFD, which IIRC is then the 2056 to Worcester Shrub Hill. There are also pairs of 170s, mostly /5s but also some /5s and /6s.

153s are otherwise available on the Coventry to Nuneaton line, singles only though. There are also 153-strengthened services on the Shrewsbury to New Street line (same as Hereford, a mix of 170/5s and 170/6s with pairs too), although which ones I can't remember. The 1042 New Street to Walsall comes off 0849 Hereford to New Street, which is another 153+170 run normally. I believe that then returns to New Street to pick up Rugeley TV services.

Talking of, the Chase Valley is also normally 170s, and as with Shrewsbury and Hereford it's a mix of /5s, /6s and pairs. Some are 153+170 but I don't know what is and what isn't.

What else? Oh yes, Northern 323s can also be done from Stoke to Kidsgrove. EMT 153s can also be sourced between Crewe and Stoke, with 158s and the occasional 156 also turning up too. I believe the 1807 Crewe to Derby and its inward working are booked for a 158 but don't hold me to that!

Oh yes, ATW 158s on International to the Cambrian Coast/Holyhead too. Mostly pairs of 158s, or at least it is when the Welsh 158s are behaving! A WMDR will cover you as far as Gobowen from New Street, which is a fair ol' way! Of course you've also got 168s on Moor Street to Marylebone runs too. My favourite leap there is Moor Street to Solihull, nice and easy 8/9 minute run and an island platform so tight connections are relatively easy. Plenty of trains too!

Unless I'm forgetting something else, you've finally got 390s 3 times an hour between New Street and Euston, well most hours until you get unlucky and find 221s vice 390 on some of the Anglo-Scottish runs! Easiest leap for these has to be New Street to International, nice little 8/9 minute run for an 8m18c leap. Easier believe it or not than changing at Coventry and interacting with the long sets of stairs there! You can also do Stafford to Crewe on 390s most of the day (there are exceptions so check carefully!) but the pluses between one and the other at each end are fairly big.

Freight wise there's not a lot I know there. Quite often you'll see a 60 or 66 on Wolverhampton Steel Terminal (on the right when heading to Wolverhampton). Stafford's supposed to be excellent for freight though. Then of course there's Basford Hall yards, but unless you happen to go by when something's coming out all the locos are well out of ID range. LNWR depot opposite is better for that thankfully! Most freight avoids Crewe station though.

There is also the Freightliner depot (Landore Street I think!) not far from New Street, best viewed from Tamworth-bound (or Nuneaton actually) trains as although 390s etc go near they're still well away from ID range of the 66s on depot. Washwood Heath yards just up the line should provide at least one 08 and usually some DBS 66s. If you're on one of the half-hourly XC 170s to Nuneaton you'll go past Hams Hall, which in the past at least has generated GBRf 66 sightings for me, not sure if it's still the case. Nuneaton is allegedly brilliant for freight too.

Oh aye, if you venture down to Worcester/Hereford and time it right you can also travel between Worcester and Great Malvern/Hereford on a FGW HST, or a 180 (only as far as Malvern for the latter). There's also a mix of 150s, 153s and 158s with FGW from Bristol and beyond you can do between Malvern and Worcester.

Right, that SHOULD now be it! It's taken me over half hour to get that lot done, which meant I even included the walk to work on this! I hope the above concludes a thorough list of options and has given you some ideas!

Sorry, cannot remember. I got a bus from Derby to Long Eaton, then walked via the bank towards Sandiacre, then caught bus from there back to Derby. Bus stop was about 50 - 100 yards on the east (Nottingham) side of the bridge over the railway (the older bridge, not the newer (A52) concrete bridge at the north end of Toton yard.

If this map loads correctly, the stop was on Derby Road (B5010) somewhere near the junction with Brookhill Street. It is close to the boundary between Sandiacre and Stapleford, and cannot remember exactly in which area it was technically located. No problem if you accidentally miss the stop and cross the railway bridge - it only adds 2-3 minutes to the walking time.

(incidentally, Stapleford & Sandiacre station used to be located at this bridge; the road name changes to Station Road on the west side of the bridge.)

From Derby Road, walk south down Bessell Lane (next to the railway); continue under the A52 bridge, and near where the road curves left, you should see a path leading to the bank (unless things have changed since I was there over 2 years ago.)

There is a Trent Barton bus route map at:
https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/network-map

But it does not show great detail in the Sandiacre - Stapleford area.

And there is also timetable info. at:

If I recall from my trip a couple months ago it's something like a 3 minute connection at University from a Cardiff bound XC to a Nottingham bound service.

You forgot about the odd Turbo which makes appearances around Worcester towards Malvern (although limited to weekends only?)

I purposefully left out FGW 165s/166s as they don't make much of an appearance on weekdays. Filling in for a 180 is usually when you'll find them in Worcester on weekdays, although for all I know there could be a booked turn for them now.

More info from tech and kite also very gratefully received. Just busy sorting 3 days hols at work, trawling hotels and cheap advances too. Promises to be a very eventful 3 days indeed.

If you're doing three days do look into the Heart of England Rover. It's not cheap I know (£79 or so last I looked) but it has an enormous area and will give you many more track bashing options. If memory serves, it also includes Nottingham which I think you said you were doing. 3 WMDRs at £24.80 each (I think that's the current price, not yet bought one this year!) wouldn't work out much cheaper, and with the Heart of England you'd only have to book travel to/from Derby, meaning you'd avoid the ching on one of XC's expensive bits of route.

Of course, it depends on your exact plans but it's well worth a look. Especially if you're solely after track in my area, covering all of the routes in the HoE area would take a couple of solid days as it is! Bonus is that you could include some 222 and EMT HST bashing as you'd be covered from both Derby and Nottingham to Leicester. Chester's also included, as is Oxford up to Leamington and also to Worcester. The North and West is also in there between Hereford and Crewe as well as Shrewsbury to Chester via Wrexham, which means you could get in some loco-hauled action with the WAG-Ex too. Oh yeah, and of course that means you can get ATW 175s in too. Derby to Crewe is also in there, which would give you alternative options as well.

All this has made me really want to do a HoE!

the plan was to travel down on the 09.42 XC HST, check in and drop the bags off, go off to Toton, have a bit tome on the bankside, hopefully returning with a sighting of very long term required 60093, a bit down time at Nottingham, before heading back to base camp. The next day WMDR, the following day whizz around a bit before returning home from brum about 19.30. However this could kill 3 birds with one stone, cracking call tech. Nowt stopping me leaving earlier for earlier start, that's without checking prices however. Aim is to get Rover in advance too but it means, I'll, be on the rover as soon as I hit Derby, earlier knocking for Toton, only draw back could be price AND an earlier start from Newcastle that's invariably means a voyager <D<D<D:roll::roll::roll: hmmm, decisions!!!!!!
Going earlier than previously planned,eg 06.25 advance single to Brum, a staggering £101.40, they know where they can shove that.

Not sure of many decent pubs near LMS station - I used to live in the area... It's certainly not the nicest part of town. There is however a Morrison's about 3/4 mile up the road where there is a cafe if you wanted something more like a cup of tea?!

The Jug and Jester is a very decent Wetherspoons basically round the corner from the station, next to All Saints church. Beats the other 'Spoons up the Parade, which is of course a longer walk in any case, hands down in my opinion.

Indeed there is. My apologies I'd forgotten that the J+J was there. I haven't lived in Leam for about 2 years so didn't remember that one.

If you are looking for lunch around Leamington, there is a brilliant little cafe right next to the station called Simons Place.

Hols booked, Train Tickets and digs booked for 3 days in the midlands and beyond, just the rover to pay for now, just gotta wait patiently for the loco hauled services on the Cumbrian Coast and then roll on June 2nd.
Going with the Heart of England option. Excited aint the word:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Unfortunately for you, it'll be me picking your brains again. So I'll apologise in adavance now.

Good to hear my suggestion was worth going for in the end! I reckon you'll have a fantastic time on it, glad to hear you're excited! I'd be the same if I was heading up your way I suspect of course.

Feel free to fire away with questions, we'll do what we can to help you! My calendar tells me June 2nd is a Tuesday, I'll be at work when you're down my way I'm afraid. Of course, if you're in Hereford in the evenings (or at least between 1700 and 1800) let me know and I'll meet you in the Spoons!

Talking of, Hereford's Spoons is about a 5-7 minute walk away from the station, Worcester has one almost literally next to Foregate Street station. Might be useful to know for things like Curry Club or even just a pint.

Tuesday's plan, is bailing off the voyager (Yes I've had to bite the bullet, the earlier ones were just silly prices) at Derby, arr 10.51, I've got a +8 for a straight hop up to Nottingham, then from there, bus to Sandiacre, for Toton bank side, 60093 has avoided me for nigh on a decade, it's sitting there and I'm in the area, so the loco formerly known Jack Stirk, I'm coming to get ya!!!!. I know I can do the same from Derby but it's a double edged sword with Nottingham, EMT units and the City's trams. So after a bit time in Nottingham, a run to Brum, to check in, drop the bags off and off out ASAP, for a few dashes from New St to International and Wolves etc or a run up to Stafford.
Wednesday I've basically got the day to have a real dig at it, Crewe, seems likely, no plan, however the WAG maybe an idea, if it's still running then ofcourse, advice on that one would be greatly appreciated,
Thursday I've got till 20.09 before Im out of there, so the Chiltern turns are on the menu, i can link up with my train home at Leamington Spa or Oxford should I choose to.
So much to choose from.

Much to choose from is right, so many options! It may sound harsh, but I would do things like Nottingham's trams on its own trip, and focus on the rest of the Midlands this time round.

If you're down my way, or at least planning to be, do let me know :)

kite159-I agree, focus on something like the Nottingham trams once the extension has been opened later in the year on a Kangaroo ticket (trams, bus & trains within the Nottingham 'city' area (http://thetram.net/pdfs/kangaroo_card_boundary.pdf)

Have a good few days:D

Sound advice lads, many thanks, still gonna do Toton though, then get back on it. Im still in the process of planning this but everytime I look at the H o E map, I think christ almighty,:lol:

Good thing you're not looking at the map for the FoSW, or planning a trip to London then

Fingers crossed 60093 is there and visible on your visit to the area too!

London is a HUGE area, I'd hate to plan a trip round there, far too many distractions, I'd see something and whizz off in the complete opposite direction and ruin the plan of action.:D:D, yeah I know you can use a bit flexibility but I'd end up going off on a tangent:roll::roll::lol::lol:. To be fair I've done a small bit of London, a long while back, mainly the usual hot spots, Clapham Jct, Ealing Broadway, Wilesden Jct, Stratford and most London Termini but I've never went full tilt exploring the avenues and alleyway's, to the extent yourself and a fair few others on here have though, in fact it's quite fascinating reading alll about it.
However a lot has changed stock wise nowadays, the London overground was in its planning infancy, plenty new units I haven't even clapped eyes on yet. Last time I was in the smoke the GatEx 73's had been, they'd been replaced by the 460's, so I made a conscious effort to get to Clapham and Victoria, to get them scratched off, something I managed succesfully too, now they've been replaced themselves and as, is the way these days, especially when I have them all, they're now giving them a refurb and completely re-numbering them. Cheers.
Tell you one thing I miss about London, it's name escapes me but there's/was a French bakers in London Bridge station, that was truly fantastic, their quiches were to die for, I'd always make for there for lunch, is that still there?
I've done a bit researching and I know 60093 is visible, got the bino's at the ready. I'm sure to anyone reading it may seem a bit daft taking a hours or two out the ranger, for just for 1 loco for all time, when there's possibly of 20-30+ around the Brum Termini to cross off the list but I want this particular long term itch scratched. To use an analogy, if 185143 was a fly in the ointment, then 60093 is like fighting through a plague of flies to get to the ointment.

I understand the 60093 thing, I'm getting that with 66953. My last Freightliner 66 for sight, one day I'll get it!

Going to London with a plan and it flying out of the window, I do that almost every time I do London! I now go with some ideas but always go with the flow and see what's happening first, see what's going belly up!
