West Midland day ranger.

Hi all,
Apologies if this has been asked before or indeed is an obvious question but I wish to do a w.m.d.r but would be travelling from Derby,the nearest valid station is Tamworth,can I buy a ranger ticket from Derby booking office along with a return to Tamworth and therefore just sit on the same train but swapping tickets once beyond Tamworth or do I have to alight at Tamworth and buy the ranger ticket from there?Basically can you only buy a West Midlands day ranger in the West Midlands?? Thanks.

I've bought a WMDR from Leyland before and IME they're really bad for issuing tickets that aren't valid there so you should be fine. If you get it issued at Derby you don't even have to be on a train that stops at Tamworth.

Incorrect.
This is a day ranger, for the train not to stop the ticket needs a validity of at least 7 days e.g. 3 in 7 day or 7 day rover.

With a WMDR your train MUST stop at Tamworth.

That's no longer true.

14.2 If you are using a Season Ticket, daily Zonal Ticket, or another area based
Ticket such as a concessionary pass, ranger or rover in conjunction with
another Ticket and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first
station that the other Ticket is valid are the same, then the train does not
need to call at that station for your combination to be valid.

When I last did a WMDR, I bought my ticket a week in advance at Cardiff Central. I bought the rover plus a Cardiff Central to Ledbury rtn ticket so that by the time I got up to Ledbury, the WMDR kicked in (from a time point of view)

Although Hereford is in the area, the first valid train was a bit later than ideal yet the previous service leaves about 15mins before the ticket is valid.

Regarding the 9.00 am start time I can catch the 08.53 to New street because even though it's non stop by the we barrel through Tamworth it will be gone 9.00.
Can anyone foresee any issues with cross country's ticket inspector please?

Were you planning to buy a Derby to Tamworth Anytime Day Return? That should be acceptable because the restriction simply says "Not valid before 09.00 Monday - Friday.".
