What use do 172.001-008 & 172.101-104 see nowadays. Snow Hill services seem to be mostly 172.2/3s, whilst 196s seem to work Birmingham New St to Hereford & Shrewsbury, and worked both Leamington/Coventry diagrams I saw last Saturday,
Unfortunately, West Midland unit allocations are not shown on RTT.

(Did a search, but could not find anything recent & relevant.)

I might be wrong, but I think all of the 2 carriage 172s are treated as a common fleet nowadays?

All class 172's are used on Snowhill line services. All versions are out and about daily. I immagine spending 1 hour at Snow Hill on a weekday you would see an example of each sub class.

Standard formation is generally 5 cars with 1 or 2 exceptions.

Hereford services do sometimes get subbed with 172's which has happened in the last week.
