A colleague of mine went to West Kirby on Friday afternoon to collect a TOD and to purchase a Wem to Manchester Piccadilly single for the next day. Clerk on duty turned him away stating that they don't offer either facility ?

Is this correct ?

Did he try to collect the TOD from the vending machine? TODs are not normally issued over the counter.

They should offer tickets in advance.

Normally with TOD's (Tickets on Departure) you are expected, in the first instance, to go collect your ticket(s) from the Ticket Vending Machine.

There is no 'West Kirkby' station listed on NR.

When you buy tickets online you are asked which station you wish to collect from. This is not because the only collect them from the station you specify but to check the station you plan to collect them from is able to issue them.

West Kirby isn't listed as a TOD enabled station and therefore it was impossible for the ticket office to issue the ticket.

I go by MerseyRail's / RailEasy's list here http://merseyrail.raileasy.co.uk/go/travel-info/station-info

The other ticket should have been issued though.

-----------

On a side note, you are expected to go to a TVM (aka SSTM) to collect tickets. I know of a couple of TOCs who have issued briefs to refuse TOD at ticket windows unless they have been booked as collect at window.

HTH

EDIT - WOW in the 5-10 mins I have spent researching for this post, two other people have come and said the same!

I presume you are allowed to pick up from the window if the machine won't issue it for whatever reason, as long as you have tried the machine.

Do Merseyrail/Northern ticket windows have the technology to issue TOD tickets even though they aren't on the 'official' TOD enabled list?

The only time I have ever collected tickets from a window is when the TOD option is available but there is no machine. TPE managed Thirsk station is an example.

I guess so - I didn't get the full brief just overheard a convosation in a couple of ticket offices (coincidently).

| On the second point, I should imagine that the clerk would get told off by his\her manager for doing so.

Of course! I've had that happen to me a couple of times at Fenchurch Street. OK the staff there are generally great, anyway, but no problem at all.

A couple of years ago (not sure if it's still the case - new machines have been installed at the specific place I'm about to mention) some stations offered TOD collection without having publicly accessible machines that would permit this, so you had to go to the ticket office to collect them. (This was Southend Victoria).

Don't know about Merseyrail, but Northern use Cubic FasTIS, as do Chiltern, which doesn't have ToD functionality.

Merseyrail does not have any TOD facilities either on the TVM or TIS.

Some customers really need to start paying attention to the booking websites.

I'd wager a CBA. And that's not a super off-peak day return acronym I'm using!
