Soon I will be doing a little trip by ferry to Oban. I should arrive there in time for the 1211 train departure with a short time to look around the town. I wouldn't mind a bit longer to do so on the way back but how much is there to see there?

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to stop off along the line? I'm not too fussed about there being lots to do anywhere, I know this is remote country (and I have been to Glasgow / Helensburgh all before) but would just like to enjoy the journey and try to take in the sights. I don't have an OS Map for the area annoyingly so I'm not sure I'd like to risk walking between stations without one, but might do if I can get one in Oban.

It seems the last ferry back to Craignure is at 1800, and I'm a little nervous about getting stranded sadly so might need to get the 1600. Also can I buy a walk-up Passenger Only Ferry ticket? If I am to make the 1528 arrival the farthest I can go is apparently Ardlui which is a bit of a shame.

All ideas welcome!

There is the power station at Falls of Cruachan, but trains only call here during the summer.

Also, for ferry fares, check the Caledonian Macbrayne website.

Also, you might be able to get away with walking between Oban and Connell Ferry. Alternatively (and if the timings work out - unsure of this ), you could alight at Crianlarich and take a Fort William/Mallaig train to the next stop of Upper Tyndrum, and walk downhill to Tyndrum Lower and head to Oban.

For Falls of Cruachan you will need to book in advance.

Oban also has a lot of shops and cafes to look round.

If you are up for a hike up a hill go under the railway at falls of Cruchan station and go upwards! Some decent views after you get out of the trees. (I managed it in about 20-30 mins.)


The station is in the bottom right of the picture - it is like a scramble up though.

Take a hike up to the folly McCaig's Tower above Oban, you get a great view of the town and beyond
