Trying to get some clarity on the Night Riviera Sleeper leaving Paddington on 8 Dec, arriving Penzance 9 Dec.

During the week, until Friday, Engineering work is closing the line West of Truro, with sleeper services terminating / starting from Plymouth.

The Sleeper leaving on the 8th is showing as running through on Real Time Trains, which makes sense as services are supposed to resume that morning.

However NR and GWR say 'This train will not run as shown'. Does anyone know which is correct?

The entry for Thursday night doesn't have the "bus service" flag on NRE so I think there will be another reason for the train "not running as shown" - maybe a change to times that hasn't been finalised.

As trains are clearly running west of Plymouth by 0500-ish, it would be odd for the sleeper not to run, and the Sunday night down train terminates at PLY so the stock balances!

PS I am sure we had a similar thread for an earlier closure (not your recent one) and the plan was the same.

As per another thread there is a fair degree of engineering work in Cornwall at present taking place in connection with a signalling scheme which will see the abolition of the mechanical boxes at Par, Lostwithiel and Truro. The new signalling is due to be commissioned in November 2023 with control of the area covered by those boxes passing to a VDU workstation at Exeter.

There is a 24/7 closure between Truro and Penzance as you mention. A look on RealTimeTrains gives another path from Truro as well:

2A50 2231 Truro - Plymouth, due 2349
1A50 2354 Plymouth - London Paddington, due 0504 (sleeper service)

During the closure period it looks as if there will be less class 1 (express) workings than normal beyond Plymouth - for example 1C90 is replaced from Plymouth to Truro by 2C90 - and there are a good deal of ECS reversing moves for trains terminating at Truro.

According to my sources, the Night Riviera (2345 ex-Paddington on Thu 8th Dec) is running and will arrive into Cornish destinations at normal times on the 9th. The alterations on that particular night are a diversionary route between Reading and Taunton, meaning a later arrival time into Taunton & Exeter, but runs normally thereafter.

hope this helps
