Wemyss Bay to Largs

I have Googled that the distance between Wemyss Bay and Largs is only 6 miles. I presume there must have been proposals in the past to connect the two given the tantalisingly short distance.

Would there be any point in joining up these two branches and making a massive loop service from Glasgow Central?

Is it really hilly up to the coast? It was quite dark when I last passed through the area.

Its been quite a while since I've been round that way but from memory the road clings to the coast and there are hills on the land side of the road.

Yes, a steep side to the east of the A78. Also bear in mind that the mile to the south of Wemyss Bay and a similar distance to the north of Largs is quite heavily built up with no old trackbed to revert to, it would be a devil of a job.

It’s noticeable that in bot( cases, the branches end a little way short of the town. Had there ever been a proposal to link the two, it would have involved going through the middle of each town.

Furthermore, there’s nothing between the two towns, except hills.

If you had a pot of money to spend on Wemyss Bay and Largs you'd be much better investing in some dynamic loops so both lines could run a 2tph service to Glasgow.

Saltcoats - Hunterston the second line is physically there so it only needs resignalling, electrification, new switches and second platforms at Ardrossan South Beach and West Kilbride.

Is there already a short passing loop between IBM Halt and Inverkip? If so, perhaps this could be extended towards the Port Glasgow direction.
