Wembley - Options for Saturday 17th July

Hi Forum Members

I have just been given two tickets for the Rugby League Cup Final on Saturday 17th July.

Last time I visited Wembley we drove from NW England to Warwick Parkway and got a direct train to Wembley Stadium.
Looking a journey planners it appears that on 17th July you need to travel into London and back out again (which we really would like to avoid).

Does anyone have any suggestions or alternative routings that will avoid both Avanti (WCML) and provide a sensible option?

If it's specifically Avanti you want to avoid, you can get an LNW service from Crewe as far as Milton Keynes Central then change for the all-stations LNWR or Southern service that calls at Wembley Central. Depending on exactly what stops are happening on the day, you may be able to get as far as Watford Junction to change for London Overground without having to go through Euston.

If it's the WCML you want to avoid then from NW England I can't really give anything better than your Warwick Parkway suggestion. Maybe use the MML (could drive to East Mids Parkway or train to Derby/Sheffield) and Thameslink to West Hampstead Thameslink then take the short walk to the West Hampstead overground station, changing at Willesden Junction for Overground to Wembley Central if the Chiltern line is closed.

Chiltern normally put on an amended timetable with additional calls at Wembley Stadium whenever there are notable events; this day is no exception.

Their timetable changes page gives a summary of the changes. You are advised to arrive at least an hour before kickoff at 3pm, so looking at the timetable PDF it looks like you'll want to take the direct service departing Warwick Parkway at 12:04, arriving at Wembley Stadium at 13:54.

As events are often not confirmed until near the day, and revised timetables then need to be planned and bidded to Network Rail, sometimes revised services are only shown on journey planners quite close to the day. But the above PDF should be accurate.

London Northwestern don't stop at Wembley Central on event days. You have to get the Bakerloo Line or London Overground to Euston, Harrow & Wealdstone or Watford Junction and change.
