Great shots, whereabouts were they taken? I didn't realise you could get so close to the lineside away from the station.

They were taken within the rail yard near the flyover. I was there on a job so thought I might as well use the opportunity while I could.

Ok, how much shall I bribe you to get in the yard? :p

Lol:) I couldn't get in myself (no key) so had to wait around for 45 minutes for a Network Rail bod to let me in...during which time I missed the only train I actually wanted to photo (the class 92 on 4E32)

Still, you suffered no shortage of 91s. :)

interesting photo of the yard. what's it used for? engineer's trains?

The Welwyn Garden City rail yard is used for terminating trains. Trains are cleaned and prepared for their next outing (there's a train washing system as well!). Trains from Brookmans Park and Welham Green terminate here.

The yard I was in which is London side of the station is unwired and is only used to either stable freight stock (there was a tamper stabled there when I was there) or to run round freight trains.

I suspect the yard HST Power is talking about is the FCC depot just north of the station?

The up yard was mainly used to deal with the traffic for the cereal factory but now mainly used for 66s to run round. The down yard was built in the late 70s to stable 313s it has 9 roads and a wonderful wash plant that always breaks down lol.
