Also, you'll need to put a passport-style photo into the plastic window on your membership card (instructions on the letter when you receive it). According to the magazine a few years ago, there were impersonation problems. Apparently some of the local holiday lets included a Ffestiniog Railway card as part of the holiday package, bought by the proprietor, able to be used by whoever was staying there! (This was before they removed unlimited trips).

Living in west Wales, I use my card several times a year but presumably members further afield (the Ffestiniog has many by virtue of it's location), possibly drawn in by the benefits of membership, would visit less often, maybe not even annually. I guess the railway benefits from a solid dependable income stream from membership vs sporadic unpredictable ticket purchases.
