Welsh Flooding

Both the Cambrian mainline and the Blaenau Ffestiniog branch suffered closures due to flooding yesterday.

The Cambrian line was closed between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth, with the last through train being the 15:30 from Aberystwyth.

The 16:09 from Birmingham International operated as far as Newtown, and then returned to Birmingham International at 19:00.

The line reopened in time for the first trains this morning.

The Blaenau Ffestiniog branch was closed between North Llanrwst and Blaenau Ffestiniog after the 11:46 Blaenau Ffestiniog-Llandudno operated.

The line remains closed today, as of 11:00.

Conwy Valley seems to be closed by flooding around Llanrwst about every other year... Perhaps a more radical solution is needed, otherwise I'd guess the future of the line is in doubt what with budget cuts, etc...

.. Any suggestions for a radical solution..?

I suspect substitute bus service could not operate because ........the road was flooded.?:roll:

The line to Blaenau Ffestiniog has now reopened, with the 13:08 from Llandudno working through.

Unfortunately I'm not an irrigation/flooding engineer... My ex was a civils grad specialising in drainage so perhaps NR could give her a call!

I was working near Blaenau for a couple of years recently.

Of note was the poor loading on many of the trains noteably the 17:36 Ex Blaenau.

And the line between North Llanrwst and Blaenau Ffestiniog has closed again this morning due to flooding, after the first two return workings worked through.

That isn't at all surprising; outside of the season the heavier loads (to the extent that anything on there is a heavy load) will be the trains timed for travelling north in the morning and south in the evening. Very few people are likely to want to commute in the other direction, nor go in the other direction for shopping - there really isn't enough in Blaenau for that.

The lack of a 1730-1800ish southbound train must seriously limit commuter traffic (the buses will get that)...Though the 1920 off the Junction combined with the 0624 northbound would at least make it viable to commute further afield e.g. Chester.

Doubt it, its been the same since the day it was built. Some days its shut due to the river levels being too high by the bridge that crosses the Conwy River between Llanrwst and Betws, not due to water breaching the line.

The line reopened again yesterday afternoon, but has closed again this morning due to a fallen tree!

The Blaenau Ffestiniog line has once again partially closed today due to flooding, initially south of Betws-y-Coed (first train of the day), and south of North Llanrwst for the second train. The line re-opened for the third train in full, but is once again closed south of North Llanrwst.

The North Wales coast line has been closed between Bangor and Holyhead due to flooding at Bodorgan since Saturday lunchtime.

If I ask nicely will people please spell Llanrwst correctly? :)

On the main point isn't the railway more susceptible to flooding than the road as it runs closer to the river?

What was I thinking lol? Fixed them all!! In my defence - even ATW have got it wrong in journey check right now!

I think you are probably correct in that statement about the flooding.

UPDATE on Sunday:
Bangor-Holyhead has reopened - first train through was the 09:24 Crewe-Holyhead

The Blaenau Ffestiniog branch remains officially closed south of North Llanrwst (not that there are any trains on Sundays in the winter) until tomorrow.

The line along the north Wales coast from Chester to Bangor was always open - it was just the section between Bangor and Holyhead that closed.

The line is fully reopened now.
