Wellington station fast trains

An announcement at Wellington warns people to stand clear of the platform edge as fast trains come through regularly. Any reason they can't use the through tracks?

Unless they've been fixed recently the points/signalling system was damaged in flooding the other year and the through roads are out of use. Not that they're particularly fast anyway!
