Retirement? Yes , some people might have thought that .First he went to Warrington, then a role at National Express West Midlands.

He's calling it an interim appointment on LinkedIn so I suspect the plan is for him to push through a significant amount of (quite possibly unpopular) change before handing over to the next permanent appointment.

My reading of his roles since leaving Trent is that he no longer wishes to deal with the day to day operations of a bus company but would instead like to focus on the process of planning and implementation of major changes (and having someone on board to lead change who has no interest in their long term relations with frontline customers and staff probably makes this process easier for the company).

He's about to turn 67 - I would imagine he's there to run the rule over things.

Arriva North East is a shadow of the business that he saw when he was previously there in 1999-ish.

Are standards beginning to slip again? I went to catch the 1435 6X from Derby to Belper this afternoon but it never turned up (I was waiting at the Corporation Street stop) I walked to the bus station to catch another of the Sixes and the next 6X at 1535 wasn't shown on the screens either but I left before seeing if it ran or not.

Returning from Belper, I just missed the 1745 6.1 which was a Solo returning from Bakewell, it was full so not sorry I missed it.
Inside Belper Bus Station was another Solo 499, very tatty and dirty and totally annonymous, just a few bits of old branding, removed but still visible.
My Versa back to Derby at 1800 looked like it had clouted something, the front dash panel appeared broken and insecure.

Images which are not exactly what you'd expect to see from a really good bus company!

It looks like they were a bus or driver short on the sixes today as 843 stopped tracking at Matlock on the 1130 from Bakewell which later forms the 1435 6x. The Verseas have never been 100% OK as I have lost count of the number of times the batch has had broken destination screens.

499 was with Notts and Derby hence the removed branding but itself and a couple of other solos have come back to trent to help out. Maybe with the new skylinks entering service on Sunday could allow for 174 and 175 to come to Derby and free up the solos back to N+D?

That sounds quite like the 747/757 that I used to catch in the nineties - Joint Wellglade/Stagecoach limited stop Meadowhall (hourly) - Sheffield (2ph) - Chesterfield (2ph) - Mansfield (2ph)- Nottingham (2ph, rather than Derby) - the remnants of that is today's Pronto.

A couple of the Red Arrow Yutongs were parked up, side by side, in Derby Bus Station on Wednesday. The first thing that really strikes you is the shorter length, compared to the Plaxtons.

What is the seating capacity of the new coaches?

I’ve not heard great things about Yutong coaches legroom-wise so that might help with the capacity

Isn’t it something like 53? Sure the seating capacity is lower than the plaxtons although probably similar to the previous scanias

53 without a wheelchair, 45 with a wheelchair

Plaxtons were 57 seats.

Could be interesting as there is a noticeable difference in length - the comment about poor leg room on the yutongs could well be correct

And that is just done when a passenger in a wheelchair wants to board? Any passengers occupying said seats at the time are just told to move? I guess the seats go in the hold. Sounds like more hassle than it’s worth tbh and a backwards step compared to having a dedicated space and feels quite passenger unfriendly

Those seats have been permanently removed so it is a dedicated space. The ones behind the wheelchair area flip up.

See that’s what was confusing me :lol: I was imagining the chaos on Parliament St or QMC as a driver moves passengers and removes the seats!
