We like to encourage our new members there, you don't spend months cleaning the toilets out ( we don't have any - well apart from 50040 that is!) once you decide to join then your in, just work with the team.

I'm a signalman on both the Great Central Railway (yes, yet another member on the GCR) and the North Norfolk Railway. I also occasionally do some TTI-ing on the NNR (yes, yet another member who's a TTI) when I get time and I'm not stuck in a box. Do I still need an excuse?

Mainline rules state 18+ IIRC, with experience and all of the rest of it. So I'd imagine the same for the preservation movement.

17 as a supervised trainee, 18 to pass out qualified apparently.

Well it started out as knowing the MD on my way back from a Rugby match then it was the work placement then it was getting into the know. So i sit on a train with the guard seeing what he does, maybe doing the doors if he ent a punchy person. Walk through at tickets and sit in the back with me shades . Oh and sometimes up at Holyhead being a right lazy person, you will notice the paddle by the timetable and the blind spot between P2 and 3. And getting a tan . I was told i have a job available with Arriva as soon as education is all done so i got me backup job sorted. Who needs Preserved when you got PASSENGERS .

You're the lucky one...For now, I'll make do with helping the preservation movement! I might not get paid for it, but that's not the point.

but isnt that the best part knowing you have to clean well as yourve had a good day getting dirty and helping

Yes you are quite right! Although some people don't like to do that, but thats why the preservation movement (not just railways) has such a wide ranging appeal.

I've been right down and dirty after a cleaning down of a small steam locomotive in preparation for a boiler inspection once. The amount of soot on my face was unbelieveable, completely black! Took until the next day to get clean! T'was unbelievable how much work there was in just that, and with both of us working on it!

The Barry Island Railway have a New Volunteers Day on Sat 27th May between 1000 and 1600. A steam hauled freight is running with brake van rides. All free - even the tea and coffee!

Not convenient for everyone obviously, but if you can get down and feel like getting your hands dirty we would be pleased to see you. There are jobs which don't involve spending hours with a pot of swarfega trying to get clean of course..

The preservation movement needs new volunteers - get involved, you might even enjoy it!

May I ask which is the best station to get to you? I'm thinking about coming down on the june 10th, can't make it tomorow because of work. Will be interesting to get a little experience... btw WSKFan if you're deffo going down on the 10th give me a bell, perhaps we can meet up

Yes, Barry Island is best. Its saves you a walk. The main festival site is at The Waterfront station at Hood road which is served by our trains from the Island on the low-level branch. Classic buses then run you up to the EWS shed where you can see the Barry 10, no, the Barry 8 now, and whichever of the DMU's is not running.

The time table and roster is in the hands of our trainplanner and will be out soon. I'll be around somewhere on both days, so give me a shout or ask someone to tell you where I am.
