Well how interesting, Train Sim Classic and 121

I have registered and downloaded Steam, and purchased and downloaded Classic, UK bundle and the NSE 121 bubble car that I'm interested in driving. This was almost £50.

I'm sure I've seen a screenshot of the proper controls in use, possibly a YouTube video as well but the "tutorial" for the "expert" controls gives me, not the real controls on the desk but some icons to select direction, gear, throttle, brake etc. Expert?

Before I thoroughly throw my toys out of the cot I thought I'd come on here first and ask what I have set wrong, or done wrong, because I'm finding it hard to believe the user interface should be as basic as this.

Anyone got any ideas where I can start please!?

It sounds like you are using the HUD (Head Up Display) controls. The HUD is really useful for telling you what’s ahead on the line, such as speed limits, signals and stations. You can use the normal controls even with the HUD present, or you can minimise it by pressing F4 I believe from memory.

You can hide the Heads Up display (the bar at the bottom which shows the linespeeds, gradients, control settings) in the settings of you wish, and regardless of whether it is on or not - you can use keyboard controls to drive all the time in expert mode.

The default 121 isn't great though, the physics is outdated and it doesn't really behave accurately with the gear changes/revs and the brakes are not well simulated.

The best thing to do would be to head to Armstrong Powerhouse’s website and download his sound pack for the 101/117/121 which sounds up your street. It’s about £7 but will massively improve the experience.

Is there a well-modelled first-generation, 100-series DMU available? Which one is the best?

I would suggest the Armstrong Powerhouse 101/117/121 Sound Pack, it adds specifically recorded sounds from the prototype, much improved acceleration and braking physics and accurate gear change operation.

It works in conjunction with any of the base Train Sim 101/117/121 from DTG and you do not need the various add-ons listed to use the pack they are only for the included scenario.

Many thanks, and I’m pleased to report I am making some progress now.

Incidentally should the yellow engine oil pressure/air-axle lights on the panel on the left of the 121 cab be working when the engine is running? They’re not showing, so either not modelled or the engine(s) aren’t running.

In real life yes, with additional lights for any additional power cars in formation.

Thanks for the help and support. I’ve changed the thread title as it doesn’t really reflect how I feel now. I know it’s a serious and detailed product and it’s me struggling, nothing else. Anything worthwhile takes a lot of getting into.
