Many posts here have well founded criticism of the railway service - so it's nice to report some good experiences. An 8 day train trip from Coventry
Day 1 Coventry to New Brighton via New Street and Lime Street. Everything spot on time - except a few minutes late into Lime St caused by a late freight train. £6.50 from BHM with Rail card
Day 2 Day3 Extensive use of Mersey Rail - everything exactly as scheduled
Day 4 New Brighton and then Lime Street to Manchester Pic with Northern . Spot on and at a really good price - £1.50 with Senior Rail Card.
Day 5 Remembrance Sunday - local buses and trams heavily disrupted by road closures
Day 6 Manchester Vic to Bradford Interchange. Again spot on at at £2.75 with SRC. and the train manager let us travel on the train 1 hour earlier than booked.
Day 7 Bradford to Leeds - spot on.
Day 8 Leeds to Derby with XC. spot on and again a kind train manager let us travel on the train 1 hour earlier than booked. £13.20 with SRC
A couple of days in Derby and then back to Coventry. Very crowded XC to Bhm but on time HST125.
I suppose that this experience may be a-typical but it was really all very pleasant. Trains running as scheduled, friendly staff, some good fares with SRC. The whole lot was around £30.00 including Mersey Rail
And the strikes had been cancelled.
So it's nice to report that a trip I was a bit anxious about (mainly because of possible strikes) turned out to be an advert for how rail travel might be.
Thank you to all the staff around the place that made it all work.
