An update from the news:

Three hundred rail passengers spent the night in a train at Three Bridges station in West Sussex after a series of line failures stalled three trains.

They waited on the platform for about an hour before getting on a heated train, where food and drink from all-night garages was provided by station workers.

All passengers had left the Southern train - on buses, taxis and a separate train - by 0515 GMT on Thursday.

"It was an absolute nightmare," said passenger Rebecca Forsey.

"We had to wait around for several hours in the cold on a freezing platform. We finally got something to eat at 4am, so that's good."

A Southern spokesman said: "We are incredibly sorry for these passengers and we clearly wanted to get them home and our people did everything they could to get them home.

"We thank the passengers for bearing with us. The weather was just appalling last night."

Why have other third rail Tocs at least attempted to run some trains whereas SN have completely given up on certain routes (eg. West Coastway) and run about 1 train all day?

There's not even that much snow.

Have to say i think its shocking that Southern have almost given up today.

Yes there was a lot of snow last night but come on most other TOC are running some sort of service so why cant Southern do the same?

I think heads should roll when all this is sorted out.

what do others think? am i wrong in thinking the way i do?

3rd Rail doesn't like snow and ice I would wager is the main reason.

Anyway SWT experienced less snow on their network than we did on Southern. The software on the 377s could also differ from that on the 450/444s, which was also a problem.

Didn't see FCC do much south of London - to be fair to Southern and others on the BML, I couldn't even get my car up the road today and that's got 4 wheel drive, Gatwick couldn't get the runway clear and the Police were telling people just not to travel in East Surrey (i.e. not even essential journeys).

Don't expect much tomorrow - it's colder and there will be more Ice

Ha ha is this for real, they are dammed if the do, and dammed if they don't, it's not there fault they run a train and it fails they get slatted, they don't run a train and they get slated, big difference between diesel units and 3rd rail units.

Toc's have a duty of care towards both staff and passengers.

Could be a case of staff not being able to get to the depot/station, so no point in trying to run trains.

That was also a factor today, a lot of conductors and drivers were stuck in the London Area.

Take a look at Scotrail the are really struggling now with the old failed units and staff problems.
