not seen too much strange roll up at station apart from when I used to work for ATW in Newton Abbot, when Arriva ran the Penzance- to Milford Haven and Manchester. I remember ATW had some failures and a few units were stuck Penzance and turned up with Wessex 158+ATW158+ATW153+ATW158 ginsters+wessex 150. may not have been in that exact order but combo consisted of all those unless someone can correct me

Once saw a 3-car class 110 Calder Valley DMU substituting for a failed HST on a Newcastle > Kings Cross service as far as York. Needless to say it was rather full so I flagged it for a peak on the following Newcastle > Liverpool working.

That has reminded me - back in the early 90s I saw a 142 at York on a Newcastle-Liverpool service. It had come from Newcastle but whether it made it all the way or not I have no idea!

Another silly Silverlink one, 8 Centro 150s on Birmingham-Euston semi-fasts on Saturday evenings. At least one week via Weedon!

321s hired to Virgin working Euston-Birmingham fasts.

Not a passenger working, but let's not forget that 10 years ago NIR were reinstating the line between Bleach Green and Antrim to bring the Derry line into Belfast via a more direct route. Due to lack of suitable motive power to haul the ballast trains, they hired in the RPSI's Londonderry Docks and Harbour Board Avonside 0-6-0ST no 3 (see link):

Is the Holyhead pendos still going or is it all voyager? I have always wondered what the Irish think of uk railways .

For me its not that weird but a Voyager hired by GNER doing a Aberdeen to Edinburgh on day that the 2004 RAF Leuchars Airshow was on:p

Voyagers now. Pendos are a regular occurrence though.

I once saw a 58 taking over a virgin cross country service at York for a failed 47. This probably isn't that strange in the grand scheme of things on this topic, but its the best I can think of at the moment.

I too remember reading in an old magazine about the HST power car being used light engine on a passenger service. Hadn't the other end of the train derailed or something?

A class 03 shunter was once sent out to rescue a train which had failed somewhere between Malton and Seamer, and haul it all the way to Scarborough

Although its an everyday occurrence and has been since 1967 but ex-London Underground deep level tube stock working on the Isle of Wight around 100 miles from London, the standard stock trains were up to 68 years old when retired in 1992 and the current 1938 ex-tube stock are 72 years old and expected to run for some years to come in my opinion that has to be the weirdest on our national network.

i think the best I saw was a great one by long rock depot on the up sleeper. 57 failed and how did they get the sleeper going, attatching back to back power cars with valenta engines I think. so 2x43+dead 57+stockwould love to have been in the front sleeper on that

I'm not sure you'd hear that much..

Only the equivalent of being in the second coach on a normal HST...

They also hired 317's for London - York (not sure if they didn't make it to Newcastle on the same day)

I have had 47+mk4 coaches when the 153's were introduced on the 1623 Sheffield - Cleethorpes via Lincoln

Part of Ireland (Northern) is part of the UK, so some probably have the same viewpoint as most folk in Britain.

And at the other extreme, I saw a photo of a HST on a Newcastle-Liverpool service, possibly around the same era or maybe a little earlier.

Strangest thing I have seen is 31430 hauling a class 310 electric unit on the Bedford - Bletchley line circa 1989 for one round trip only. The 0750ish from Bletchley in those days was a schools train and usually strengthened to a four car DMU; presume that the extra two cars were not available that day and somebody used their initiative

I was at Ridgmont that day and knew nothing until the 31 appeared outside the window - far too late to grab camera from bag and get a decent phot with the sun just right, had to make do with a rather poor shot of the return journey :(

Presumably first sectorisation and then privatisation have made "odd stock" occurences less and less likely- associated paperwork and costs of hiring in, issues with signing route+traction etc.

Because hauling on the Bletchley-Bedford was not uncommon thats what I felt made the Gospel Oak more riotous than the Bedford goyles. 25/31 plenty workings but I'll give the 20 (was it 20227?) as truly outrageous! As well as the annie and clarie rake and 310 drags there I've also heard of a BG being used with the station benches moved inside for seating, although I've a feeling that might just be a tale...

Bloody hell, Don't remember that one :D

Any idea of dates and why?

2003-2004 time, happened a couple of times presumably due to Virgin stock/loco shortages.

oh yeah, a rat shoving the Stourbridge Town bubble up and down all day is something I wish I'd be a few years older to have had a blast on!

I know hauling was relatively common on the Bedford-Bletchley line, but all the other ones I had seen during the two years or so that I worked in the area were of DMUs being hauled. I have also heard the tale of the parcels stock being used although the version I heard was that it was a DPU - agree with the sentiments that it might be well an "urban myth" though :)

(Will have to ask my bus driving acquaintance when I next see him as, IIRC, he was the person I heard it from)
