Travelling from Holytown to Edinburgh is £11.80 for an anytime return. From Motherwell to Edinburgh is £13.60. The stations, as the crow flies, are about 1.8 miles apart.

The route planner on the Scotrail site shows that travelling to Holytown via Motherwell is an acceptable route, but incurs no cost increase.

Is that right?

Same applies for Bellshill to Edinburgh - £13.60, but there's valid routes from Holytown that take you to Bellshill for a change with no price penalty.

There are many such inconsistencies across the country. This is why ou can often save money by legitimately splitting tickets, starting late or finishing early!
