Weird phone noise outdoors?

Outside (Normally on a busy road), I keep hearing a loud phone waiting tone...

Does anyone know why that happens?

If there are any blocks of flats nearby it could be something to do with the entry-phone/communications system.
Sometimes these are amplified quite loudly to be heard over the sound of traffic.

Is there any lorry depot nearby? Your noise could be the bleep of reversing vehicles? (There's a depot not far from us and when the wind is in a certain direction we can hear these bleeps indoors!)

Follow the sound, see where it is coming from
This will be easier on a Sunday morning, when there is little traffic

I also heard it on a Firday night recently, at about 9ish, from a balcony facing the seafront of the 7th floor in the Avon House flat block on Westcliff Road, Bournemouth, Dorset.

So your not hearing it one place but several different ones? I would do what rail-britain suggested and try and follow it, failing that see if any of your friends hear it also. If they don't then perhaps a trip to the doctors is in order...

I could understand if you heard it in the same area, but 27 miles apart...

You might find you are hypersensitive to specific sound frequencies

However, you might find it is the new style street lighting which gives off a high pitch tone when the bulb is about to fail
Another sound it could be is a PA system left open but not broadcasting

As above, mention it to other people, they too may hear it and make it easier to trace

Finally, try and record it...

Do you only hear this outside? If you hear it indoors as well, I'd be wondering about tinnitus ( you don't have to be deaf to get that ).

Just around the corner from where I live I always used to be able to hear this high pitched squeeking sound. It was like the noise you get when someone is on a swing, but very high pitch and constant. Never found out what it was. Not heard it for years, so I don't know if it's stopped, or if I've lost the ability to hear the frequency (although I can still hear the bloody thing Morrisons have up to get rid of teenagers hanging around).

When the wind is right we get noises coming over from the industrial are about half a mile away such as PA systems and phones ringing (with external bells).
