Noticed something really strange. Normally Melksham to Bridgend can be bought as one ticket. The National Rail journey planner is refusing to do this for 27 and 28 December and is trying to sell separate tickets Melksham to Swindon and Swindon to Bridgend. The culprit seems to be Christmas engineering work, where the South Wales trains are being diverted via Box (non-stop Swindon to Patchway). So it's seeing it as a double-back between Chippenham and Swindon, which would be fair enough if GWR were stopping the diverted South Wales trains at Chippenham, but they're not! I doubt any GWR guard would challenge this in reality (it's the sort of level of unreasonableness that only a computer could come up with), but this is quite annoying.

If you need to buy in advance and online, would via Bath or Temple Meads or Bradford on Avon produce results?
That really isn't a very appealing route at all, compared to a single change at Swindon and First Class all the way to Wales. I'll probably end up using a walk-up fare anyway for flexibility's sake anyway though. The advances aren't very good value in the other direction anyway (less than a tenner off the FOS), and Seatfrog is showing no trains at all for Christmas Eve. I was really just trying to see if there was anything cheaper before just going for the anytime fare.
Sorry, didn't realise you were originally looking at Advsnces. Anytime tickets bought using one of those via points would be valid (Via Cardiff, it says!) by any permitted route including - I assume - Swindon.
