The style of music I listen too (trance/progressive) is really designed to be listened to in a club environment, so keeping the volume right down isn't on the menu for me ... I'd rather not listen to any music than not be able to appreciate it properly.
I have emboldened that part of your posting which goes to prove that there is most certainly a tremendous locational difference between a train journey and a club environment where music of the type that is normally played at high volume is concerned.
I will defend your right to listen to such music at high volume to the hilt, but only if it is played in the correct locational environment.

Then there's the music you do like but all you can hear is tsh-tsh-tsh-bang-tish.
Perhaps a new musical genre can be established where all the music played is just of this very nature as a normal output....
