Weekend work.

Now that i have turned 18 (yesterday) i have decided to try and get some weekend work. I dnt really want to be in a shop, so i'm trying to find out if Southern, SouthWest Trains or southeastern will "provide" weekend work. Mainly train dispatch .

Any of u'se lot know?

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you will find it extremely difficult to find any weekend work as such on the railway, particularly in a role such as dispatch. Mostly only recruit full timers on the railway, with some part time on roles such as barriers/customer assist but even then it's rarely weekends only.
All I can suggest is you write to the companies you've mentioned and ask if I'm honest.

All training costs are initially subsidised by the Labour Supplier and paid back over time.

I am going to **** on your parade mate sadly.

Contractors aren't going to want a weekend worker, they will want you for a few months at least (on some form of placement program).

I suggest you get into a shop. It is an area the interviewers look very positively at. I can think of numerous examples of where retail experience has resulted in staff walking into jobs.

The railways want commitment. If you can't provide that commitment, you're playing at it. Play with leisure trains instead.

I have to also agree, get retail experience, gives customer service and cash handling duties, the TOCs look highly at this experience. Also weekend posts and very very rare, shifts are usually rostered to cover weekends or overtime is offered which is hard to take away once staff begin to get used to it.

Yeah, its a bit silly to think that one can go straight from unemployment to an ideal job, that's not the way things and and especially more so in the current economic state. You should aim for jobs which you could see as something you could stand doing, not necessary anything that make you amazingly excited but nothing that your going to hate, like mentioned earlier retail is your best shot.

Just do as much research on a job position as you can though, I managed to get a job at The Range for £4.11 an hour till I'm 18 then minimum wage and they don't give reference's so I'm a bit screwed.

Its not worth a company training someone just to do weekend work - there's lots of stuff that goes on in the week, such as training, briefing, monitoring that you would not be around to do. Get a job in a shop that has a reputation for good customer service or something, and that will stand you in good stead when you can apply for a full time job on the railway.
